Coming soon to an ebook reader near you.
I'm looking forward to a reader with 64 GB of storage.

Yikes!
Not if you're still limited to the current navigation methods on most of them! Can you imagine, for example, trying to find a book 10-at-a-time on a Sony PRS300 if you had 10,000 books on it?! |

Hmmm...having catalogued about 2100 books with calibre the size is only about 5GB. How many book with 64 GB ? Dont think i will ever need that much.

I have enough books on my 505 to last me the next 6 months. I also have 40MB free from the 192MB total storage, part of which is consumed by the custom firmware and fonts. I have no idea what I'd do with 64GB.

As readers come to be more practical for (colour) magazines, comics, etc., the files sizes will increase, so such memory capacities will become useful.

How much you need depends a lot on the books you read. I'm just finishing typesetting Little Women, fully illustrated, and it's about 5.6MB for one book. That's a lot different from the text-only books that are often less than 0.5MB.

If it has audio capabilities, I could probably fill up a chunk of it with audiobooks. Regular ebooks just aren't that large, though. I've been so pleasantly surprised at how little space they take up.

Children's books are another category that haven't hit ereaders much yet, but will do. These are likely to be large (plus incorporate sound/animations to further increase file sizes)

One of the plot elements in Vernor Vinge's recent Rainbows End (set in 2025) is a project to (destructively-- the technique consists of tossing the books into a industrial-strength shredder connected to a vacuum tube lined with thousands of tiny cameras-- as the fragments tumble down the tube, they are photographed thousands of times and distributed computing networks digitally patch them back together again) digitize every book in a major library-- and the protests against it. In the end (very minor spoiler) the project-- and similar ones done at other libraries-- results in the whole of English literature being made available to everyone on cheap 128PB memory cards. My ebook library will not be complete until I have that. Last edited by ardeegee; 08-20-2010 at 04:11 PM. |

Many readers also play MP3 files and display pictures. I personally don't think you can ever have too much storage space. In fact, I insist on removable media for any device I purchase just so I can accommodate any and all content I may want.

That sounds really useful. If your reader also does HD video.

While it clearly wouldn't be needed for text-only books, a magazine in pdf format is often more than 50MB, a comic around 20MB and if I remember correctly the first ipad edition of wired was around 500MB, so there are plenty of ways for people to use up the space even without departing the area of reading so overtly as storing things like videos.
