Post Austen, Jane: Pride and Prejudice (Illustrated). v6, 14 Jan 2013

A fully illustrated version of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". This is the fully proofed first-edition text of the book, with 24 full page illustrations by C.E.Brock added.

Plot summary from Amazon:

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.

Illustrations are used, with thanks, from http://www.mollands.net and http://www.solitary-elegance.com. Both these web sites are great resources for all fans of Jane Austen!

Enjoy!

EDIT: 27 Mar 08

As a result of reading the book, spotted two typos and an uncentred scene change. Fixed, and uploaded v3.

EDIT: 10 Aug 08

Replaced the cover with a much improved one. Thanks to Paul Durrant for this. Uploaded v4.

EDIT: 25 Apr 09

Spent the last month thoroughly proofing the book against the first edition text. Dozens of genuine errors corrected, and literally thousands of changes (changes to pretty much every sentence in the book) made in punctuation to match the first edition's punctuation, which is very different to modern usage.

Note that this version of the book now uses Austen's original spellings, which may appear odd to modern readers: her random use of "ei" in words which we now spell "ie", such as "neices" instead of "nieces", "shew" instead of "show", "chuse" (sometimes, but not always) instead of "choose", "staid" instead of "stayed", and many more. The spelling is also internally inconsistent: "Philips" sometimes appears as "Phillips", for example, "de Bourgh" is randomly "De Bourgh". All this matches the original text.

Uploaded v5.

EDIT: 14 Jan 13

Another round of thorough proofing. Many more errors fixed, and also the formatting greatly improved. I would now regard this a a finished text; if you find even the smallest error, please let me know. Uploaded v6.

Wow! Thanks Harry, for the beautiful work you've done on these illustrated Jane Austen books. They are clearly a work of love, and uncomparable to the current illustrated books mentioned in the Jane Austen Anniversary thread.

I have downloaded them all, and will, I know be back to check out other titles.

Thanks for all you do, and for pointing me in the right direction.

It's Kindlegen. I believe it inserts the entire "source" of the book into the file.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a proofreader in possession of a Dalek avatar, will thoroughly exterminate all mistakes and errors.

Cheers for the great effort!

That makes sense if it includes MOBI+KF8+source (1.89×3 = 5.67, approximately the .mobi size).

Thanks to pdurrant's "kindlestrip" tool, I've uploaded a new Mobi version, which is only 2MB in size. It's the same book, so no change in version number.

Cool 13 instances of "&c."

I recently chose this version to read and came upon something that had no meaning to me. it was a sentence ending in &c.! A little research and experimentation yielded this:

the actual code view entry was &c.
which translated to &c. in the book view
in some other versions of Pride and Prejudice etc. appeared in the code & book views
there were 13 instances of this in your version

Here's hoping that this is helpful.

This is not an error. "&c." is an old way of writing "etc.". It's very common in early 19th century books. Means exactly the same thing, of course: "&" is the word "and", which has the same meaning as the French word "et".

Ah, I see! What had me going was its appearance in code view. Thanks by the way for the wonderful version of the book!

Actually, "et cetera" is Latin, and the & sign is derived from a Latin abbreviation that means exactly "et", you can see that in some typefaces, particularly in script style:

It becomes then rather obvious that &c. and etc. are the same thing.
