Any DRM solution for small ebook store ?
We are small ebook store website with our own eReader (Adobe SDK installed).
Please advise any other DRM solution that we can implement for our small ebook store. Is it only one choice which is ACS ? Our budget will be issued for ACS. What about hosted DRM server solution ? Can it work with our eReader? Pleasea advise, thanks |

Well, if you're using the Adobe RMSDK for your device then the choices seem to me to be either your own content server (provided you can get publishers to agree to provide you with content directly) or using a distributor such as OverDrive or LightningSource (Ingram) which is what book stores such as BookOnBoard, Diesel, Waterstones and others do.

How about the Baen model? Just sell the books without the DRM. Problem solved.

I second the Baen model. It's both budget-free and technically simple.

Or use Watermarks. That way customers don't have to deal with DRM, but if their books show up where they shouldn't it is easy to track where they came from.

I won't necessarily refuse to buy an ebook with DRM ... but I do stop to think how much I really want that ebook, and whether a legitimate non-DRM copy might be available at another store.
I buy the majority of my ebooks from Fictionwise (only the multiformat books, without DRM), Smashwords (no DRM) and Baen (no DRM). Good luck, however you decide. |

I have no particular bias against buying DRM'd books, given how trivially simple it is to remove thanks to Alf. Why a small ebook store/website would even consider spending money on the implementation and running of something which offers no tangible protection for their products is, however, quite beyond me.
If your products are of any interest to anyone, they will be pirated. End of story. DRM will have no impact on that whatsoever. |

If the store is reselling other people's books, then they might have to have DRM as part of the deal.

I agree with the others - don't waste your money. The majority of people are fundamentally honest, and DRM won't stop those who aren't. |

I agree with the posts above. I support stores that in turn, return the favor. When I buy a book, I like to control where and how I read the book. I've recently paid $10 for a six month membership to DANL, for instance, something I never would have done for DRM laced books. Freedom of personal use for something as trivial as a book, is not only something I like, but feel entitled to.
However, the books the OP is selling might have DRM as part of the contract. DRM is expensive, and for many people quite easy to nuke. DRM makes books about as useful as video games written for specific consoles. I don't want books that only work on one thing. They are books. They should work for everyone. |

Depends. Some stores are their own 'supplier' getting books directly from the publisher to sell from their own Content Server, while others use a supplier/distributor such as OverDrive or LightningSource. Almost all big publishers will require a DRM solution of some sort if you want to sell their books.
