Strange things happening after Kindle update

Ok, so I updated my Kindle to 1.0.4 and it's been acting strange ever since. It freezes every now and then. Another weird thing happened when a purchased book just "disappeared" without me deleting it--I had to actually re-download it.

I could live with it being a bit quirky until the official next update came out, but now I realize that the Kindle doesn't show up on my Mac as a drive any more. I tried it on several computers and I get the same result.

Luckily, the SD card shows up just fine when it's in the Kindle, so I have been able to add and delete stuff easily, but the main Kindle drive is off-limits to me for the time being.

Anyone know of a way that I can get back to 1.0? Or should I just wait until the next official update? I don't want to take a chance on bricking it since it works now, just not as fully functional as it was.

Check with Amazon. They might be able to remotely reverse the firmware to 1.0.

There's so little of real substance in this update: new screensavers, 'improved line function in browser', and change in default search---that I wonder if they are doing an Apple/Iphone and putting some code in there to discourage or block hacking attempts the way Apple has done with Iphone updates.

I'm active in another Kindle forum and the mod there is an Amazon associate and has been threatened by Amazon to the point that he deletes any post which even LINKS to pages which could be even vaguely construed as encouraging/approving or even mentioning any sort of Kindle hack.

It's definitely possible to revert to 1.0 firmware. If you have the images from 1.0, that is. As those contain code copyrighted by Amazon I'm not going to share them...

Um, no. The update also included better support for Audible.com audiobooks as well as a new audio player screen. It may not matter to you, but I know at least one person who is considering the Kindle because of this.

I lost the ability to mount my Kindle after the 1.0.4 update, as well. When I called amazon, they had me do a firmware reset which solved my problem. I had expected the reset to undo the update, but after the reset, I was still at 1.0.4 - I've been running fine for the last week.

Is it kosher to post the instructions on the firmware reset? I think I know the other forum Kingston was talking about, and I don't want to break any rules.

tlrowley, yes it is kosher. Feel free to post the firmware reset instructions. I myself would like to have a read even though I don't have a Kindle.

Yes please give the directions on the firmware reset! Besides, it will save them the hassle of having to tell every single person that calls!

I haven't had a chance to call--I did email them though. But they haven't got back to me yet.

But good to hear that it fixed your problem and that I wasn't the only one to have the problem.

Ok, I just called Amazon. Once again, I have to say the customer service over there just rocks. Excellent, quick service. They helped me do the firmware reset which was really really easy to do (involved pushing a couple of buttons). Have we figured out if it's ok to post the directions on here?

Interesting note: As I was wating for my device to finish the reset, I was chatting with the help guy. I asked him if he had a Kindle and he mentioned that he did not because they were to expensive. I mentioned that I also had a Sony Reader and he wanted to hear my thoughts on the two.

Anyway, long story short--he is actually thinking of getting a Sony Reader now! So I'm hoping that his call wasn't be recorded!! Hey, any way I can get more people into the ebook cult is a good thing.

I think the cost was the deciding factor for him and the fact that that there are more hacks out there for the Sony.

Warning - you'll lose everything if you do a firmware reset - this should be an option of last resort.

To reset the firmware, you do a pinhole reset and immediately hold down the home key. You'll be presented with a screen with three options, one of which is reset the firmware. It took me three tries to get the timing right for the new menu to appear, I guess I wasn't pressing/holding the home key quickly enough after the reset. I don't remember the othe options on the screen (I was too worried about the firmware reset), perhaps tsgreer's memory is better than mine!

Once I reset the firmware, my Kindle started behaving itself again - I think that somehow (firmare upgrade, me messing around, act-of-G*d) my filesystem had been corrupted (the missing 90K I mentioned earlied, which was not just in a simple trash file) and the firmware reset rebuilt the filesystem. It's been running great for a week, so there are no terrible problems inherent in the 1.0.4 firmware, but the upgrade process might be a tad bit buggy.

Sounds like it. So the best idea then is to copy off all content and make note of where in each book you were and then update and do a firmware reset and then put the content back on.

I didn't have to push the pinhole. I was told to make sure wireless was off. Press "Alt-Shift-R." Same thing as pushing the pinhole, but you don't have to remove the Kindle from it's case. Right as the screen went blank and before it restarts, I had to push the "home" key and hold down for a few seconds until a single page with three options printed at the bottom showed up.

After doing this ad the bottom of the screen are these options: 1. Firmware Update. 2. Firmware Reset. 3. Exit.

And yes, like you, I lost of my info from the kindle, but not the SD card that was installed. Also I will have to re-register my Kindle because I just noticed that it's not "Travis's Kindle" anymore, so now we know an easy way to reset the device before you sell it. (Re-registering can be done from the Kindle, under settings. Type in your email that's associated with your amazon account and password and it's all done. Takes less than a minute.)

But I'm glad I did it. It acts normal now and the upgrade remained intact. Most of my books were on my SD card anyway, so not a big deal and I back up pretty regular.

I say it acts normal now, but that's for only the last 20 minutes or so, so I can't for certain say that it's totally fixed. Seems to be acting much more healthy now though!

By the way, I didn't remember either, like you I was just concentrating on not doing anything wrong. But I just did it again just now so I could see that happened.

You're braver than I - I was happy with the way it was working and wasn't willing to risk another reset just for the sake of the group

I reset mine a week ago and I'm happy to report that I'm not missing any memory, my indexing has continued to work (that was another problem I was having, I couldn't read/create the master index file according to the error logs) and I can still read the FS on my Mac - all is well, now, here, and I hope for the same for you, tsgreer.

Interesting. Thanks tsgreer. So that means Kindle still retains the old firmware after the upgrade? That'll take 28m space on the internal storage, isn't it? Did you really revert to 1.0 firmware, or you just reflashed 1.04 firmware?

If we do can revert back to 1.0 firmware by ourselves, I might just venture with 1.04 now.
