Correct again as to the reason behind the name. Curtmantle refers to his preference for a short cloak, allowing for rapid movement - he was a hasty chap.

John actually had *four* older brothers! (Though the oldest of them died before John was born.) So despite the huge estates, there appeared to be nothing left for him, and no one expected him to inherit the crown.
