Browser alternative
Hi,
i would like to start discussion about how likely is it to port some open source browser to kindle? ... something like chromium (here is link about compiling for arm linux) or midori - which is GTK app - someone here started proting GTK apps to kindle .. this one could be nice. Why? mainly tab support, dowloads support |

Have you tried building any of those for the "kindle" yet?
What where your results? Have you tried re-building the existing webkit based browser to include the features you wish? What where your results? What do you mean by 'start a discussion'? Is this a request that someone else do it for you? |

Been working toward getting webkit compiled for the kindle.
Currently have a few - required - build fails but it's rumbling along. What will be done with it when it is ready for service is another discussion. Update when there is one. |

O.P. asked the question about downloads two weeks ago and got a link to this in reply:

Didn't the Kindle 3 allow you to use 3G everywhere? As I recall there was controversy when Amazon retroactively disabled a feature that people paid for.
What's the legality of violating Amazon's ToS to use 3G for general purposes? |

By the way, trying to build webkit from sources released by Amazon I got error because of missing header files, like DefaultFontHelper.h.
Edit: I was blind. It is there Last edited by baf; 10-09-2012 at 04:16 PM. |

SkipStone
I built Midori browser, but it would probably need a lot of hacking to make it work. Initial state is that the main window opens, but menus don't work and it is unstable.
I had more luck with SkipStone. This one works quite well after minor adjustments. If I find time I will work more on it. Or maybe there are some other lightweight browsers that use webkitgtk? Edit: You will find more info in this thread. Last edited by baf; 10-20-2012 at 03:17 AM. Reason: progress |
