And you look for options - right now we're looking at third party solutions that allow us to manage devices even when they're owned by the end user. But that's not out of the box, obviously. |

Or you could get them iPads so they can enjoy themselves with Angry Birds and other non job-related tasks... This way the iPads at least wouldn't pose a threat to IT security (maybe company security)... |

I wasn't planning to upgrade as I love my iPad2 so much and I'm very happy with it. However, since I'm going to the US soon, I realised that if I buy two 3gen iPads and resell one at home (where they are more expensive), it wouldn't cost me anything to upgrade if I also sold my iPad2. So now I'm considering it. Since I use my iPad primarily to read academic articles, the retina display would be a bonus. However, I'm a bit put off by all the yellow screens that people are complaining about. I'm just going to have a look in an Apple store when I get to the US and then see what I think.

Our company certainly uses it to configure, manage and wipe iphones and ipads remotely from a central location. Of course, it costs a bit. Best regards, Andy |

I don't mean to denigrate executives. Steve Jobs is an excellent example of an unreasonable executive, and face it, without Jobs, Apple would have been a second or third rate computer hardware manufacturer struggling for market share. To an executive, a reason something can't be done is an excuse, not a reason. That's not to say that sometimes the excuse isn't valid - merely that a real executive is looking for reasons he can do things, not reasons he can't. So...the executive tells you he wants something that can't be done, and you wind up figuring out how to do what can't be done - aka "looking for options". Nothing wrong with that, so long as it doesn't spill over into illegality. |

In my opinion, as you go up in an company's structure (and I work for the biggest IT company in the world) priorities and goals change. The CEO may be more interested or focus on metrics and actual results and will see the actual worker as an instrument to get things done. If you're the actual worker, your point of view is in terms of getting things done, you don't care about metrics , your paycheck is not as good, but you go to bed with less stress and more quality of time. Using of not using an iPad as a valid company device has a lot of technical and business implications. It's not only to ensure is secure, but see the actual benefit or profit that will generate on users. That also needs to be quantified, which is difficult too. And if you deal with sensitive stuff like databases, on my case, the things start to get more and more complex because like other said, you need to protect your or clients information if you lose the iPad or device to avoid legal issues or even worse, losing money and giving data away to competitors. I just had a look at the new iPad and compared it with my iPad 2, and I must say I'm tempted. Contrary to what I thought, even with my weak sight I could see the difference. Added to the fact that I'm frustrated with the limited storage capability of the iPad 2 (I was cheap and got the 16 Gb model)...

One of the reasons we upgraded is the first gen iPads aren't running the apps well anymore. I think it has to do with the developers producing apps for the 3 and not taking into account the older models having more limited processing power. One fo the games I play recently updated and it now it crashes all the time. Luckily, we got our shipping notification today and I should have it on Tuesday, a week earlier than expected.

I would only swap if 1) I was as rich as Bill Gates or 2) if it were a straight trade or nearly so.
