Because it's been free a long time and re-edited and published by HarperCollins (the 99 cent sale version) for shorter than that (10 years newer on the copyright date, for example).

What's amazing is that HarperCollins didn't insist he remove the free version....

Of course, the paid version is 160 pages in print. the free version says it is "an article"

In kindle format on my old copy of mobipocket reader it comes out at over 500 pages. A pretty long article.

Even if removed from the internet the free version would still be available from the Wayback Machine.

The Golden Compass: His Dark Materials #1
by Philip Pullman

is $2.99 at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Compass...golden+compass

Below is the blurb:
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal--including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.
Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.
But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other. . . .

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Beyond the Waters of the World by Nebula-finalist Ruth Nestvold (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a recently-written follow-up to her Asimov's SF-published gender-bending science fiction novella "Looking Through Lace" which was a multiple Tiptree & Sturgeon & Asimov's Reader's Choice Award nominee back in the day (also previously offered free to us).

The Allied Interstellar Community first contact team on the planet Kailazh is faced with even more challenges than most. But dealing with an alien culture is not only difficult for those who arrive on a foreign world. What of the inhabitants of the planet, who now have to deal with realities so strange to their way of thinking, it will have an impact on everything they believe?

Kislan is a factor in his family's shipping company, a man who has seen many ships arrive at the docks of Edaru from many different cities, who deals with foreign goods from all over the known world. But the ship that arrives from the stars brings more than exotic innovations, it brings ideas that will change his life.

And it brings the beautiful ambassador from the stars, Toni Donato.

Strange Stories by Pu Songling
Quote:
Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio or Liaozhai Zhiyi (also Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales of Liaozhai, is a collection of nearly 500 mostly supernatural tales written by Pu Songling in Classical Chinese during the early Qing Dynasty.
The stories differ broadly in length, with the shortest under a page long. Many are classified as Chuanqi, or Zhiguai, sometimes translated as "marvel tales," that is, stories written in classical Chinese starting in the Tang dynasty. Pu borrows from a tradition of oral storytelling where the boundary between reality and the odd or fantastic is blurred. The stories are filled with magical foxes, ghosts, scholars, jiangshi, court officials, Taoist exorcists and beasts.
Book I
Tales 1-10

Book II
Tales 11-20

Book III
Tales 21-30
Each book is .99 so for around $2.97 you can get 30 tales.

The Future, Imperfect: Six Dystopian Short Stories by Nebula-finalist Ruth Nestvold (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a mini-collection of Exactly What It Says In The Title, mostly originally published in Asimov's SF magazine and other outlets, with one story also reprinted in the 2007 volume of Horton's Year's Best Science Fiction, according to the blurb.

"The Future, Imperfect" is a collection of near future, dystopian short stories by Ruth Nestvold. Environmental changes -- slow in some regions, catastrophic in others -- have had a major effect on our world, not for the better. While water wars and pandemics have devastated the Mediterranean region, and a major earthquake and the resulting destruction of nuclear power plants and sensitive research facilities have made much of California a wasteland, corporate-sponsored enclaves defend themselves from the have-nots. What can any one individual do to make a difference is such a world? These are the stories both of those who tried and those who failed.
