Gtrs, Never Too Late appears to be written with only women in mind; but I suspect that if the advice is of any value, it should be relevant to men as well. So I spent the 99 cents.

Book Description
. . . .
Great post, thanks. I've got the dead-tree book (I haven't read it), but it's great to have a digital one now.

I've been familiar with Ludwig von Mises for quite some time, but I was not aware that there was a Mises Institute. That's great information to know, to me.

I might have to read this book "sooner," rather than "later." Bumpkin that I am, I didn't realize that there was such a dichotomy between fascism and capitalism. Socialism and capitalism, yes; fascism and capitalism, no.

For example, I have "always" heard that Nazi Germany was capitalist. Soviet Russia, on the other hand was socialist, and that's one of the reasons that Hitler hated Russia. With Mises, as an Austrian who was living in Austria and then Switzerland (both next door to Germany) during the rise of the Nazis and Nazi Germany, as well as an economist, he would know how things actually were. I've got to do some reading.

No recommendation, but a "heads up."

First, thanks for digging up this additional book from the Site. Great find.

The "heads up" is that Mises will take a conservative position on the causes, and cures needed, for the Great Depression. He will be critical of, for example, Roosevelt's "New Deal." Roosevelt was very heavily influenced by an economist by the name of Keynes. Keynes was a proponent of direct injection of money by government into the economy in order to cause economic growth. Mises was not a proponent of that.

I'm not promoting either one of the positions above, although I have my strongly-held opinions. I'm just trying to let you know beforehand, if you didn't already, where Mises will be "coming from." That might help you either to decide to read the book, or decide not to.

Been Wanting to Know More about the History of England and the English Language?

. . . . then here's a good opportunity to get a great book on them at a great markdown in price (81% from digital list).

The Adventure of English: The Biography of a Language. By Melvyn Bragg. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 69 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.95; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Arcade Publishing. 336 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Engl...+of+a+Language.

Book Description
Here is the riveting story of the English language, from its humble beginnings as a regional dialect to its current preeminence as the one global language, spoken by more than two billion people worldwide. In this groundbreaking book, Melvyn Bragg shows how English conquered the world. It is a magnificent adventure, full of jealousy, intrigue, and war—against a hoard of invaders, all armed with their own conquering languages, which bit by bit, the speakers of English absorbed and made their own.

Along the way, its colorful story takes in a host of remarkable people, places, and events: the Norman invasion of England in 1066; the arrival of
The Canterbury Tales and a “coarse” playwright named William Shakespeare, who added 2,000 words to the language; the songs of slaves; the words of Davy Crockett; and the Lewis and Clark expedition, which led to hundreds of new words as the explorers discovered unknown flora and fauna. The Adventure of English is an enthralling story not only of power, religion, and trade, but also of a people and how they changed the world.

Basically under Fascism business, indeed everything, was subject to the directives of The Leader. Business that didn't would be seized and run in the interests of the Leader and The People.

Which means /not capitalism/ to lovers of definitions.

Of course such persons have told me that Maggie Thatcher, Winston S Churchill and Bismarck were socialists and some also believed that since he called his party the National Socialists Hitler must have been one.

So clarify what you mean by Mixed Capitalism and indeed by Communism and Socialism and the question will be clarified.

Napoleon and Marie-Louise: The Second Empress by Alan Palmer

Arch-duchesses have always been disastrous for France', Napoleon once remarked, yet in 1810 he married the Arch-duchess Marie Louise, the eighteen-year-old daughter of his persistent enemy, the Emperor of Austria.

Though their union was a political expedient, Napoleon lived happily and proudly with `my good Louise' until defeat sent him to Elba and she returned to Vienna, to become eventually the sovereign of an Italian duchy.

Alan Palmer gives the first detailed portrait of this extraordinary episode in Europe's history.
He traces the changing fortunes of France and Austria through the years of Napoleonic ascendancy and its eventual eclipse.

Alan Palmer was head of the History Department at Highgate School from 1953 to 1969 when he gave up his post to concentrate on historical writing and research. His many books include `Metternich: Councillor of Europe'; `Alexander I: Tsar of War' and `Bismarck'.

Enlightening. Thanks.

Yep, it's essential to define your terms.

One more (that I plan, anyway) thing to ponder. "Nazi" is the English term used for the NSDAP, the National Socialist German Workers' Party. With them having both "socialist" and "workers'" in the name, you would think that it was a communist party, if you didn't know any better!

Of course, you couldn't trust anything that Hitler or Stalin said. Words had no inherent meaning for them. They were things to be manipulated to conceal and obfuscate the reality of things, to accomplish desired results.

For most of the people of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia (one major exception, that I think of right off hand, being the peasant farmers who faced forced collectivization of their farms), there was little difference between them in the most important aspects of their daily lives. Under both systems the people faced tyranny, with the incumbent fear and loss of freedoms.

Is everyone still awake? ha

Free Today On Amazon UK - Gallipoli Memories by Compton Mackenzie

'The year is 1914.
The writer Compton Mackenzie is eager to do his duty to his country and join the army.
But crippled with Sciatica, he knows he will never pass any medical examination.
Disillusioned, he resigns himself to travelling Europe and writing his next book when fate presents an opportunity.
He is offered a Staff Job by Sir Ian Hamilton, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
He travels immediately to the coasts of the Aegean.
This journey is the beginning of Mackenzie’s experience of the war.
There were few more controversial battles in that epic conflict than the Gallipoli Expedition.
'Gallipoli Memories' throws fresh light on many of the more obscure and unknown issues of that campaign.
Told at first hand by a writer who found fame with books such as Whisky Galore, its provides a fascinating account of the battle, and the bravery of the men who fought it.'

Rarely-Marked-Down Biography of the Swede Who Saved the Jews of Budapest--$1.99.

A source that I use for such things indicates that it's been nearly three years since this ebook was last marked down--any. If you have an interest in the subject matter of this book, you oughta grab it now, while it's marked down 81% (from the digital list price).

Wallenberg: The Incredible True Story of the Man Who Saved the Jews of Budapest. By Kati Marton. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 14 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.95; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Arcade Publishing, publisher. 272 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Wallenberg-Inc...ws+of+Budapest.

Book Description
A fearless young Swede whose efforts saved countless Hungarian Jews from certain death at the hands of Adolf Eichmann, Raoul Wallenberg was one of the true heroes to emerge during the Nazi occupation of Europe. He left a life of privilege and, against staggering odds, brought hope to those who had been abandoned by the rest of the world. Here is the gripping, passionately written biography of the courageous man who displayed extraordinary humanity during one of history’s darkest periods.

bartveld, what I do is go to Amazon's Kindle page, and type in "free kindle books ____", filling in the blank with whatever strikes my fancy.
