Yes, even when they are dead. Just as, if you build a house, and then die, the government doesn't come along and take it off your heirs. It is a part of your estate.

Maybe it's stuff they can't get for free. I don't pirate music so I have no idea how hard or easy it is to get hold of stuff. Regardless, that doesn't change my point. I've never known anyone who has pirated stuff just because it's convenient or move visible. It's always been about the money.

And even if it isn't always about the money, so what?

And if the heirs have no interest in exploiting that property I see nothing wrong if squatters move into it.

If you can download Danny and the Dressmakers tapes that only sold about 50 copies 32 years ago I'm pretty sure you will be able to download anything that is currently commercially available in digital form.

So you are not entitled to the copyright system in the same was that I am not entitled to get money from the state without working.

Yes, the can choose to publish or not publish. They have no right to a copyright system (monopol).

Of course I have a right to demand that the state should enforce copyright - the law gives me that right.

I'm afraid that I don't see the connection with getting paid to read books; that is not at all the same thing as the creative act of writing a book.

Oh yes he (and we) do. It's called the rule of law. It applies to houses, land, property as well as intellectual property.

Not that same thing, but it is one way of making a living, by reviewing books, writing blurbs, etc.

Certainly; I'm not saying that it's not a valid way to make a living. I simply didn't see the relevance of Tommy's suggestion that the state should pay him to sit at home and read books.
