Still free in the US, prices and availability in other regions often varies. The business books that were free today are more widely available.

Lead Like Ike, by Geoff Loftus, is today's Kindle Student Deal of the Day. Normally selling for $14.99, it is $2.99 for today only.

Book Description
Dwight Eisenhower's leadership methods during the most daunting project in history, the D-Day Invasion, provide invaluable strategies for today's business person.

No modern CEO has ever led such a large organization-the immense Allied military forces of the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada-in the face of such crushing pressure to succeed. Lead Like Ike begins with Eisenhower reporting for work as the CEO of D-Day Inc., facing a ridiculously tight timeline, having to create an executive staff and company, and then managing D-Day Inc.'s early projects, the invasions of North Africa and Sicily. By analyzing military operations as business operations, and the commanding general as CEO, Lead Like Ike finds management lessons for modern corporate executives, such as:

* Handling the board of directors: FDR, Churchill and the Combined Chiefs of Staff
* Building and leading an executive staff
* Creating the company: Making the Allied military into a single force that could fulfill its mission
* Understanding the competition and the market: Hitler and Occupied Europe
* Preserving his stakeholders: Eisenhower was loathe to waste his soldiers' lives on anything less than complete success.

Is it just me or has there been a hge decline in the number of new free books in favor of discount books?

It's the 12th, and it's not free (it's $10).

I hadn't noticed a drop in the number of free books, but it looks like Amazon is pushing business books, which I would guess few of us here are actually interested in. I have to wade through a lot of uninteresting-to-me books to find the thrillers/mysteries/SF&F that I want.

My understanding is that Amazon does not chose the free books but that authors and publishers chose which books to put up for free.

Total numbers wise, it is actually probably up (I can tell due to the number of posts I make on my blog). Rather than mostly first of the month, there are usually a big pile each week. But, the content and genres have mostly changed, due to the publishers that have jumped in (FT Press, christian publishers in, some bigger names stepped out). The big six have gone to discounted books more and more, though, it seems. One example is a book that was free last January and is $2.99 this year for New Years.

Bargain Book:

Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel by Michio Kaku (author of the bestseller Hyperspace) is discounted to just $1.99 for the Kindle.

Quote:
Product Description:

Teleportation, time machines, force fields, and interstellar space ships—the stuff of science fiction or potentially attainable future technologies? Inspired by the fantastic worlds of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Back to the Future, renowned theoretical physicist and bestselling author Michio Kaku takes an informed, serious, and often surprising look at what our current understanding of the universe's physical laws may permit in the near and distant future.

Entertaining, informative, and imaginative, Physics of the Impossible probes the very limits of human ingenuity and scientific possibility.

About the Author
Michio Kaku is the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics at the CUNY Graduate Center, a leader in the field of theoretical physics, and cofounder of string field theory. He is the author of several widely acclaimed science books, including Parallel Worlds, Visions, Beyond Einstein, and the bestseller Hyperspace.
