The Game book seven in Laurie R. King's Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Series is $1.99 right now at Amazon US | B&N | Kobo | Google | eBooks.com | OmniLit
Quote:
It’s only the second day of 1924, but Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, find themselves embroiled in intrigue. It starts with a New Year’s visit from Holmes’s brother Mycroft, who comes bearing a strange package containing the papers of an English spy named Kimball O’Hara—the same Kimball known to the world through Kipling’s famed Kim. Inexplicably, O’Hara withdrew from the “Great Game” of espionage and now he has just as inexplicably disappeared.

When Russell discovers Holmes’s own secret friendship with the spy, she knows the die is cast: she will accompany her husband to India to search for the missing operative. But Russell soon learns that in this faraway and exotic land, it’s often impossible to tell friend from foe—and that some games aren’t played for fun but for the highest stakes of all…life and death.

Free Today on Amazon UK -The Secret Generations by John Gardner
'May, 1910
The world is on the eve of a war set to ruin the lives of a whole generation.
The Railton family are intimately involved in the world of espionage, which will become so crucial to the conflict’s outcome.
With the death of General Sir William Railton, the family patriarch and hero of Balaclava, the family is thrown into a world of violence and intrigue.
Manipulated by the new head of the family, the ruthless arch-intriguer Giles Railton, each member of the dynasty comes to play their part in the ‘Great Game’ of Intelligence.
Through the story of one family, whose lives become caught up in some of the greatest struggles of the twentieth century, John Gardner traces the birth, the successes and the failures of the organizations now known as MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.
From the battlefields of the Western Front to Russia on the eve of revolution, this epic work of fiction tells the story of the dramatic history of Britain’s intelligence and security services.'

Free Today on Amazon UK -Body Politic by J M Gregson
When the ambitious MP Raymond Keane is found dead in a frozen lake, Superintendent Lambert and Sergeant Hook soon discover that the politician was adept at making enemies.
Plenty of people wanted him dead.
There is his former lover, Moira Yates, whose life he has ruined; his business partner Chris Sampson; Joe Walsh, a disgruntled constituent; and his supposed fiancée, Zoe Renwick, who had been on the point of breaking off their engagement.
Moira Yates seems to have the perfect alibi. Since her break-up with Keane, she has been afflicted with agoraphobia, and is unable to set foot outside her house.
In fact, all the suspects have alibis, but, one by one, they are challenged by the dogged police work of the two detectives.
And when Lambert finds an object by the lake he is sure he has his murderer in his grasp...
But the 'Body Politic' has surprises in store he could not have imagined.

Free Today on Amazon UK -Gone Feral by Gwen Moffat

'Sophie Daynes cherishes The Boathouse, inherited from her family and situated in remote, beautiful Cumbria.
But her boorish, layabout husband, in his forties and obsessed with his young mistress, is only interested in its cash value – and how best to get his hands on it.
With both temperatures and passions rising in the height of a searing hot summer, greed, gossip, and mystery combine to make this a volatile visit they won’t forget.
Is the suspicious man living in the woods nearby really a villain on the run?
And who are the shadowy figures ‘stalking’ Sophie from the lake edge?
When the pleasure steamer churns up more than mud, and a grisly package is discovered washed up on the shore, the lives of all connected with the Boathouse are changed dramatically and irrevocably…'

Free Today on Amazon UK -The Fire Ship by Peter Tonkin

'Richard Mariner and his wife, Robin, are in the Indian Ocean on the trial voyage of a high-tech sailing boat designed, built, and owned by two Vietnam veterans, ‘Doc’ Weary and Sam Hood, when they encounter a burning freighter.
She has been strafed by gunfire, the crew has abandoned her—and her cargo had been armaments.
In the Persian Gulf, Prometheus II, the giant flagship of the Heritage Mariner tanker fleet, and its crew, are seized by terrorists. But the holders of the hostages make no demands.
Sir William Heritage, Robin's father, and Richard's friend and partner, cannot contact his daughter and son-in-law, and is unable to obtain any information about who has hijacked his ship, or why.
He flies to Bahrain to investigate—and is immediately kidnapped himself.
The three incidents are linked to one mysterious terrorist group - a group controlled by a madman. '

Thanks for this suggestion & its still free at Amazon UK.

Its been years since I read some of the early books in this series when I still borrowed from the library. I'm looking forward to renewing my acquaintance with his works.

A bunch of George Harmon Coxe titles published by Open Road are 2.99 rupees (about 5 cents US) and a bunch more are 142 rupees (about US$ 2.40, but couponable) in the Kobo India store.

Detail are in this post from the Kobo code thread, and apologies if the cross-posting is a problem - I just really think both threads might be interested...

Here's a legal thriller first published by Simon & Schuster in 1996, free today from Amazon: The Spring by Clifford Irving. It wasn't available at Kobo or B&N.

Quote:
"An extraordinarily entertaining and thoughtful combination of "Lost Horizons" and "Presumed Innocent." Not only is it a mystery--on at least two levels--but it poses troubling questions concerning prolonged life and its ultimate value. -- Booklist

Set in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado, this is the tale of a snowbound mountain town with a remarkable secret to protect from outsiders - a secret worth dying for, and perhaps worth killing for.
Dennis Conway, New York criminal lawyer, has moved to Colorado to marry Sophie, the beautiful mayor of the 9,000-feet-high secluded hamlet of Springhill. When his new in-laws are charged with hunting down and murdering two of their close friends, Dennis is shocked, disbelieving, and he defends Sophie's parents at trial in Aspen.
What he learns in the course of his investigation is a stunning portrait of social contract in the interests of longevity - a love story, a murder story, and a skiing story with the most remarkable avalanche scene ever written.

"[Clifford] Irving delivers a parable about aging and euthanasia that's spare of prose and thoroughly creepy; book discussion groups will love it. Recommended for all libraries."-- Library Journal

"Irving drives his narrative from the fantastic to the realistic and back again, playing a game that's sure and steady." -- Publishers Weekly

A repeat freebie first published by Bantam and winner of the Shamus award (2002): The Poisoned Rose (Gin Palace Trilogy #1) by Daniel Judson.

Here's a quote that doesn't tell us much about the book, but I love the description of the author:

Quote:
“Daniel Judson is so much more than a crime-fiction novelist. He's a tattooed poet, a mad philosopher of the Apocalypse fascinated with exploring the darkest places in people's souls.” -- Chicago Tribune

Hour Zero by Michael Dean [Endeavour Press]

Quote:
Germany, 1945.

At the end of the war, Captain John Hodge is getting ready to be de-mobbed.

That is until he is given a new assignment on a War Crimes Unit, working to track down works of art the Nazis have looted and hidden.

Briefed by his new CO, Lieutenant Colonel Palfrey, Hodge travels to Ludswigburg, where the paintings are known to have been transported by Karl Wagner, Hitler’s former bodyguard.

At the American army camp he meets Captain John Lindsey, who has the job of de-Nazifying the area, rebuilding damaged towns and reorganising the community following the destruction of the second world war.

Lindsey has little interest in Hodge’s mission, until he realises it is linked to a group of Nazi sympathisers who are still active - called the Werwolf group.

And one of the key leaders is Karl Wagner.

Can Hodge find Wagner and restore the precious works of art?

Or will Werwolf destroy everything in the countdown to Hour Zero?
