But it doesn't recognise the Sony reader I had with me at this time, but the real need of ADE is to download the book.. (and authorize the device... There should be a way to force it to recognise it..)

No, you only need Windows ADE to authorise the device - a one-time operation. Once you've done that, you can simply download files directly from the bookstore.

Nope you need to download them using ADE (the link you get is not the book, but a link to a file that tell ADE how to download the book)

These ADE specific download links are just xml files (*.acsm) containing some metadata (ADEPT transaction informations and Dublin Core) and the real link to the ePub. One can just use the real download link contained in such a xml file...

Amazing! So someone could write a tiny app for Linux that reads a .acsm file and downloads the .epub file. The ePub would not be readable under Linux, without circumventing the DRM, but it would be ready for transfer to your reading device via USB.

Do you have a sample .acsm file?

Yes - hence my comment that the only thing you need ADE for is to register your device. Once you've down that, it's no longer necessary.

All you need to know about ADEPT links is here. (Look at "Appendix A – ADEPT Link XML Schemas")
Edit: Forget it, it was the wrong one... Last edited by netseeker; 07-07-2009 at 11:26 AM. |

Thanks to everyone who detailed the workings of epub drm, this is very valuable information (in particular I wasn't aware that you could only register a limited number of devices with one given adobe ID).
Running ADE on my linux laptop doesn't work for some reason. The application runs fine and displays non-drm'd ebooks, but fails to authorize drm'd one, there's some kind of connection problem. I'm not feeling like spending time trying to resolve it now, but I like knowing that there's still some chance of acheiving it. |
