The apply button does that, at least on the code that I am running at the moment.

Added a close button. Just to note that you can also close both sub panels and the main window by pressing Esc

@Kovid: I found some odd behavior with tooltips.

Running the mouse pointer over an icon gives me the tooltip. Good. Moving horizontally to the next icon, the tooltip goes away (becomes 'calibre version ...'), but does not come back when I get over the next icon. If I go vertical, then the tooltip goes away and the new tooltip appears when it should.

It seems that you get one tooltip per button group entrance. Exit and re-enter the button group, and the tooltip appears again.

You mean the status tips (the text that appears in the bottom line)?

Yes. The tooltips work fine. Wish my brain did.
