Steve Jobs would make a good politician. he certainly knows how to give lots of answers that say nothing.

Today was the big Apple press conference.
Apple showed the SAME issue on a RIM phone, a Blackberry and an Android phone. iPhone 3GS customer return rate...6%. iPhone 4 return rate 1.7% Dropped calls? The iPhone 4 has less than one extra drop call in 100s than the 3GS. Jobs attributed the fact that the 3GS was able to use the many existing iPhone cases as to why there weren't fewer dropped calls with the iPhone 4 which has a new shape and cases that fit it aren't out in force yet. They've sold 3 million iPhone 4's already. So every one go screw themselves. No...because they love ALL their customers and want everyone to be happy.... They are giving away free bumpers...and refunds to those who bought them. The iPhone 4 was the top rated ever smart phone by Consumer Reports except for this issue....and CS said the bumpers solved it. So....there you have it. Oh...and they played this funny you tube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKIcaejkpD4 Lee |

The way Apple would make more customers happy would be to include the case/bumper in the box with the iPhone 4 and then there would be less issues. So if you go buy an iPhone 4 and the cases are not available, you are screwed. And if Apple was to find a fix in hardware for the antenna, would they give a free swap for the iPhone 4 as it is now?

So Steve has said:
1. That Apple iPhone users don't know how to hold the phone correctly while, apparently, users of other phones do know how to hold their phones. 2. iPhone users don't even know enough to complain as only 1/2 of 1% did so. 3. Apple placed the antenna on the rim of the case for better performance and is issuing a free case to enclose the antenna for better performance. 4. Apple has 18 PhD engineers that didn't catch this problem so there is really no problem. 5. But Apple is working to improve its antennas so they don't have this problem 6. Apple customers love Apple. 7. Apple loves its customers. I think that sums it up. |

Why can't the antenna be placed along the top? I don't understand how placing it on the lower side of the device helps reception.

Sounds fair enough to me, but I don't own an iPhone 4....
Scott, you have an iPhone 4, and had the problem.... are you satisfied with this response? |

It can't, but Apple is all about form over function. My guess would be that placing the antenna at the bottom was slightly more aesthetically pleasing and stuff the fact that it compromised functionality.

One of the more interesting (to me) bits from the conference:

September 30 is not all that far away. I would think any changes must already be close to or in manufacturing. |

Putting the antenna on the outside of the phone improved the reception over the 3GS. Quote:
