Yes, you can have </a> or /> to close an <a. If you have text then you have yo have </a>. But if not, you don't need </a> and can use />.

I'm moving this from that discussion in the Editor forum since this is the better location for it:

Code:
<a id="GBS..."/>
i.e. not
Code:
<a id="GBS..."></a>
ETA: If Beautify has been run all anchors will look like the latter.
I can't get Modify Epub to remove those Google Play page maps no matter what I do. I've pulled up one of my epub3 books with:
Code:
<a id="GBS.0007.01"/>
(self-closing) sitting right at the top of a file (immediately after the <body> statement). I've run Modify Epub against it with every variation of checking the Remove Page Maps and Remove ONLY Google Play Page Maps. The <a></a> pair doesn't go away.

I've also tried it after Beautifying the file (so the codes aren't self-closing):
Code:
<a id="GBS.0007.01"></a>
with the same result (codes not removed, though they do get converted to the self-closing variety).

Modify Epub's log always says just:
Quote:
Looking for pagemaps
Looking for Google Play pagemaps
It never actually does anything with them.

If the first thing I do to an epub from google is run Modtify epub uning the second set of setting then all page marks are removed.

I can't get Modify Epub to remove those Google Play page maps no matter what I do. I've pulled up one of my epub3 books with:
Code:
<a id="GBS.0007.01"/>

It never actually does anything with them.

I've attached my Modify Epub settings. Yes, they're different from yours. But, I can't see anything that would stop it from removing those Google Play page maps (again, I've tried all combinations of those two checkboxes). I've also included the top of one of the pages with the play map on it and the Modify Epub log for the run.

EDIT 1: I was also wondering if it might be an epub3 thing. But, since your files are xhtml, I'm assuming that book that you used is also an epub3 (just like the one I'm using).
EDIT 2: And, I've just made another two runs with your first and second set of settings. No difference.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:epub="http://www.idpf.org/2007/ops" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">

Are those <a id="GBS...."/> the actual Google Play page maps? I ask because I downloaded a free Google Play book (Bram Stoker's "Dracula"), added it to Calibre and ran Modify Epub on it. I've put the whole log, below, but for our purposes here, the important part is:
Code:
Looking for Google Play pagemaps
	  Removing Google Play pagemap file: Ops/_page_map_.xml
	  Manifest item removed: _page_map_.xml (_page_map_)
It found and removed the page map file and manifest item, but did nothing about those anchor tags. The book is in epub2 format (not epub3) and the anchors are non-self-closing. But, after the run, they got converted to self-closing and another run of Modify Epub still didn't do anything with the tags.

This isn't the end of the world for me. If those kinds of tags get in my way, I can always run some easy regex to move or clean them out. But, what I'm seeing with Modify Epub isn't what I'm expecting. But, then, it could just be that I don't understand what's what. However, the help file says the option should remove both the files and the anchors. It doesn't seem to be doing that latter.

Don't select to remove unused images as there is a bug. If the image is specified to be used in CSS (section break graphic), Modify ePub will treat it as unused and deleted it. Use the Calibre error checker and it will correctly tell you if any graphics are unused for you to delete.

If the Google eBook has <a id="GBS...."></a> then Modify eBook won't work to remove them because it's a bug in the code. It has to be <a id="GBS...."/> in order to work.

Modify ePub changed all those <a></a> pairs to self-closing anchors. The next run of ME still didn't delete the (now) self-closing anchors.

What you do is not delete any page maps on the first run and then delete the page maps on the second run.

I've tried it and yes, it does work.

I'm taking a guess that when it looks for page map stuff to delete, it first looks for the Google Play pagemap file (Ops/_page_map_.xml) and the Manifest items (_page_map_.xml (_page_map_)) and either pulls the GBS anchors out based on those or looks for the self-closing tags itself. But, once it removes the pagemap file and manifest items, later runs (when the non-self-closing anchors have been self-closinized) will say "no such pagemap/manifest objects exist, therefore no GBS anchors exist. And it quits. Total WAG on my part. But, it seems to explain the behavior.

So, as you say, the work-around is to not use the "remove page map" options until after doing a run and getting those tags self-closed.

That's what happens from my testing.

I'm not sure if this is from this plugin or from something in the Calibre Editor. Normally, I like to have my chapters (files) in an epub in the following order:
  1. titlepage.xhtml
  2. jacket.xhtml
  3. tpage.xhtml
  4. toc.xhtml...
Occasionally, I'll run into a book where the order for the jacket and tpage will swap places (which is where they were in the original book) after saving the book, exiting the Calibre Editor and running Modify ePub. I'm assuming some file like nav.xhtml or the .opf file isn't changing order when I drag the file locations around and Modify ePub reorders the files to match. But, I don't know. Does anyone know for sure which file might be dictating the change in order and why it's not changing when I drag the files?

The OPF sets the order.
Most people use the editor to reorder.

IIRC Modify does offer to Slam the TOC to the end (but not send to front) Only flatten

With the pointer to look at the opf, I found some information that the spine in the opf sets the order. So, I dragged the jacket from its 3rd place location in this troublesome book and watched its entry change position in the spine to reflect that.

Saved and quit, then re-opened. Still good.

Quit and ran Modify ePub, reopened and the jacket had been moved back down to its 3rd place location in both the file list and in the spine. EDIT: I guess I shouldn't say it "moved it" -- I've got the "Add/replace metadata jacket" option on, so I guess it's deleting the old one from the 2nd place location and creating a new on in the 3rd place location /EDIT.

It's not the end of the world. But, I just don't understand where Modify ePub is getting its information to move the jacket to that 3rd place in a few books. Usually, it leaves it in the 2nd place location.

ePub go...

1. Cover
2. Titlepage

That's why the jacket is being put 3rd. So out in your Cover correctly as 1.
