Thanks a lot for all the wonderful work you're doing for this device guys!

Just create a customrun.sh file at the root of the device and copy this to the file:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
mount devpts /dev/pts -t devpts
telnetd -l /bin/sh
It will be renamed and executed on the next device reboot (to avoid any bricking script, it is renamed). Then you'll just have to telnet to the device, you'll get full root access to the device.

Someone also reported success at executing compiled code using Samsungs' toolchain. Very promising indeed!
So if i understand the procedure I have to replace the firmware but I also have to create a file named customrun.sh at the root directory?
How do I create this file under windows? Just creating a text file and rename it will be good?
Thanks a lot again

We speak about shell (syntax like used in Linux/Unix) the characters must be ANSI.

There is 2 shells we can create :
(You must connect/mount your E60 to a PC USB connector and create the shell on the E60, not on the microcard)

= cutomrun.sh : to test your script it will be run once when restarting E60 (if your shell has an error this error/problem will not exist on the second restart).

= autorun.sh : this script will run for every E60 boot.

Here is "my" autorun.sh to connect using telnet (be carrefull : without password !) :

=====================
#!/bin/sh
LOG="/home/log.txt"
date > $LOG
/usr/sbin/telnetd -l /bin/sh &
=====================

You can download the last (today) modified firmware here :

Miroir : http://www.multiupload.com/XRHKK81RKN

Ce fichier contient exactement l'équivalent du dernier firmware sorti, à un détail près : la page d'accueil web est de nouveau Google.fr
So read the today README :

http://ps3linux.fr/E60/foxfirmware2/README.txt

All is here, in French (after 20 pages) :

That works indeed !

I used a port scanner (Advanced Port Scanner v1.3) to find out the reader's IP address on my network. I could check that two ports are open: 25 (SMTP) and 110 (POP3).

Do you believe that the browsing I/F could be improved?

There is a typo that could be corrected: when you turn WiFi on, the dialog says "Activé", when it should be "Activer".

Good work; I am pretty confident there will be more improvements, especially since we now know how to "un-brick" the thing!

And now for something not that different… bumping the E60*thread.
Nice little reader we got here, indeed. Quite hackable. Here's a modified Samsung firmware for it, brace for impact.

It's Flash'n'Play. Meaning you can just update your device with it and let it handle everything.*No files to create, nothing to code, nothing to do beside flashing the file - it's made for the casual user. Of course, if you like customization, we got that covered too.

The bookstore has been replaced by a web browser icon.*You will be able to access Google, Wikipedia, the Acid Test, or whatever you want on the 6 inches e-Ink screen - even your old bookstore if you know its original URL.

Samsung E60 FoxFirmware v2.1
============================

Modified firmware for the Samsung E60 reader.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
(Heavily tested, should be totally safe)

Download link: http://www.multiupload.com/7219RETQ6N
73d11c665d959aee4b259a74f5e10656 E60FR-CP.bin

What's inside and why should I care?
----------------------------
x Full internet access, with the homepage of your choice
x Theming: custom icons and boot sounds
x Run your own shell scripts
x Some stuff has been translated to french, if you happen to speak french (english is still available).

If you want to use the net browser, you will still need an Adobe ID and an active Wifi connexion.

Internet on my E60? What does it look like?
---------------------------

This is what you'll get with the default homepage :

URL*and search bar are combined.*Either enter a URL and click "Go", or a search term and click either "Google" or "Wikipedia".

So, taking the plunge? Then read the following.

Preventing bricks, if ever
------------------

Download the official Samsung E60*firmware, rename it E60k.bin and store it safely in the folder /Firmware_Update/ inside your device.
You'll then be able to boot to Recovery Mode by holding the VolumeUp key while powering on the device.
(If you don't have a E60k.bin firmware file loaded inside your*E60, you'll still be able to load one from a µSD*card)

How should I flash this firmware?
-----------------

1. Connect your E60 to your PC with a USB*cord
2. Download the modified E60FR-CP.bin and save it inside the /Firmware_Update/ folder of your e-reader.
3. Properly unplug everything
4. Go to System Settings and Update.
Your (European) E60 will find a 1006 update.*Actually, it's based on the 1002.1 firmware, but that's fine.

Some optional details
---------------------

- The internet browser will load a page from your device's memory, located at /Custom/Web/indexpersonnel.html; a nice default page will be provided with a URL&Search bar allowing you to browse everything, and search Google and Wikipedia (fr).
- Custom theme should be stored in the /Custom/Theme/*folder to work.*If there's no theme here, or no .lock file, it will be recreated at boot.
- Custom bootsound: /Custom/Bootsound.mp3 (you can place an empty file here, too).
- Custom shell scripts locations: /Custom/customrun.sh (runs only once) and /Custom/permarun.sh (runs at every boot).

You can mess around with the files quite safely.*Just be extra careful with permarun.sh if you ever create it, you can prevent the E60*from booting if your script is buggy - test things first with customrun.sh.

Custom themes?
------------------

Yay! Here are a few samples.

Awoken

Faenza

Gant 3

I'm not sure if I want it, I dunno, I'm not keen on messing with those things, I'm no developer…
There's no need to worry - flash it (easy) and enjoy using it!

No clue.

You might be able to give it a try though.
1 - First, be sure that you can access the Recovery Mode on your E65; it probably works the same way as on the E60 (place an official firmware nammed "E65k.bin" in the /Firmware_Update/*directory).*You will not loose any of your data (books, music…) but your settings will be erased (Wifi key, etc).

If you can't access the Recovery Mode, don't go any further.

2 - Try flashing the modified firmware for E60 on your E65, using the standard E65*update method.

If it works: great!
If it doesn't: use the Recovery Mode to revert to an official E65*firmware.

And someone can change the dictionary to another in E60?
More, E60 can't support entire fonts unicode. In Sony e-reader, we can add more fonts by create a folder /fonts/, so our files ePud can be seen with more fonts. With E60, how to do like that ? I try with /fonts/ but it doesn't work.

If I change the file header and the filename of this CFW could this be used for my UK E60?

If so, what is the 'Magic Number' for UK readers, or how do I find it?

Thanks in advance

hey guys, just to let you know, from the UK

I've just managed to flash the korean firmware to the device using the Rescue Mode method.

I'm going to try the modified french firmware next and let you know how that goes. If it does go wrong I can always fall back on the Korean firmware. I wasn't that attached to the WHSmiths sotre anyway

Nice one apk5 +karma

How did you manage it? Did you just use the FW 'as is' or did you have to change anything?

EDIT: I'll add karma when I get back on my pc

Talking

I just flashed it "as is"

The default language seems to be dutch, but that's easy enough to change.

as described in a previous page, the way to get to rescue mode is to put the firmware in the Firmware_Update folder on an SD card. Then hold the volume up button while you power on until the rescue screen comes up.

It'll take a while for the thing to start up the first time after you update the firmware.

if i were you i would go and download the korean firmware so you have a backup.

I'm loving fox firmware as it goes. big up there like. the internet works fine, i can check my college email easily enough. i doubt the battery will work very long while on the internet, but it's still handy. I haven't tried downloading or uploading anything yet, i'll get onto that in a moment.

one thing that's a bit annoying is the keyboard in the browser is an AZERTY setup, it's a little confusing. I'm told that AZERTY is the standard french keyboard setup, so that's understandable. I don't have the coding knowledge or the time to change that myself, but it doesn't bother me that much

Like has been pointed out by some before, a lot of the web is pretty difficult to use like this. Also, it tends to scroll down automatically until you stop it by pulling the scroll bar back up to the top.

I may attempt to get some sort of web-based feed reader going on it that's compatible with the screen size, as i doubt google reader's going to agree with the E60 as it's only just usable on my notebook. This may be something of an academic question however as I can use calibre to convert text-based feeds like the daily newspaper and such into Epub format complete with indexing, and it can also fetch your google reader list as well, if you use that. The only thing i don't find it handy for is design or music blogs which are often very graphics intensive and often incorporate video and such.

anyway, yeah. gonna go play with it a bit more, try installing some of the custom themes

oh, here's a thing. I went to the Dictionary and it crashed the thing. The only way to get back was to flash it back to Korean and then back to Fox.

Can't seem to get my reader into recovery mode to do the upgrade, tried several times but no dice.

Oh well, I'll wait till one of the devs replies with something a littel more stable maybe...

Cheers anyway apk
