The tools package from DarkReverse's blog (there's a new version, start at the end of the blog comments and work back to find it) has a simple Windows GUI. That's why I was so thrilled with it. Just unzip and click on the appropriate tools (one to remove DRM, another to convert to HTML if required).

I have the tools but after it unzipped and I found what looks to be the appropriate tool and clicked on it, a dialog box pops up asking if I am sure I want to open the file and when I click yes, nothing happens. Somehow after tinkering, I was able to open the file in python but it's just code. I don't speak code. No simple windows GUI.

Thanks for your response, btw,

Simply extract **the entire tools archive**. It will not work if you try to run it from within the zip archive or only extract the one file you think you might need.

After extraction, open the folder of of the type of book you want to work with. Then double click the appropriate *.pyw file and it is a windows gui that will lead you through the conversion.

If it doesn't work for you, then your system is simply not set up with python appropriately. If you run into trouble I am sure someone on that particular blog will help you figure out why.
Thank you! I had the most recent version and I got to the windows gui but why does it want a name and cc#? I put it my name and last 8 digits but it says that's wrong?

An eReader *.pdb book is encoded by the last 8 digits of the credit card number and the the name on the credit card. That is what eReader / Barnes & Noble" calls "social drm". If you bought the book yourself, you should have that information.

The idea is that people would be unwilling to give away the credit card number and the name on the credit card, to others so that the book (while in its DRM form) is safe from theft.

In contrast, Mobipocket/Kindle uses a PID and you could in fact give the PID to others along with the DRM'd book if you wanted someone else to read it.

Your own eReader program should ask you for that same information (actually they want the entire cc number!) and the name on the credit card when you try to open that book for the first time (or already has and has kept it stored someplace).

So assuming, you are trying to process an eReader .pdb book and not some other type of book (Barnes & Noble also sells epub format books with DRM which require a different "tool" to deal with those books.), the program is doing the right things (ie. the same thing that your own official eReader program is asking you).

If you need more specific help, simply pm me here or ask on the Dark's Blog for help. People there are friendly and happy to help as long as it is just format conversion for another reader or for archiving and not theft. They are very clear about that on the Dark's blog.

Hope this helps.

AWESOME!!! It worked! I typed in the name as it appeared on the cc but not how I paid for it on B&N. I corrected that and it worked. It just converted in Calibre and I'm about to import it to my device! Wow, you guys are so good!

Thanks so much!

Thanks for your work -the ereader script works nicely. However, I have a couple of older titles to which I've lost the cc info. Any solution?

tried ineptkeymac.pyw and got a 4kb file but could go no further with ineptepub.pyw

Can you go back to where you bought them, update your cc# there, and redownload?

Ineptkeymac.pyw and ineptepub.pyw are not for that kind of files. They are to be used for ADE files. A 4kb file would most probably be wrong.

Hello!

I got an ebook from a friend who purchased it at barnes and noble as a gift because I live in Europe and i'm not able to get it anywhere else, not on amazon or anywhere else. I've been reading this thread and i just recieve

"SyntaxError: invalid syntax"

everytime i try to do this.

is there a possibility that someone here could do it for me?

Hi,

The syntax error can come from not having the right version and type of python installed. You need the 32 bit version of Python 2.6.X.

The 64 bit version will not work with some apps, and Python 3.X is not supported.

Remember to use the buttons to select the book you want to convert, and where you want to store it, and the other info.

Should work unless the ebook in question is not an eReader book but is instead an epub book. Barnes and Noble sells both types of ebooks.

Ohhh, ok now it worked. Thank you so much! But I don't know what to do now.

I got a folder with images, several files: "chapters.dat", "bookname.html", "bookname.pml"

What do i do with them? How do i read the book?

Hi,

You can double-click on bookname.html to read it in a Web Browser. You can take the bookname.pml file and use DropBook with it to get an eReader book.

You can use either one with Calibre to convert the book to another format (epub, Mobi, etc).

Hello, I have a secure ereader book that I'd like to convert to html or epub. I haven't the first clue how to use the scripts discussed here. I run Windows Vista 32 bit. I have managed to strip DRM from ADEPT files but I don't know much abuot ereader at all. I have only the one book in this format which I bought legitimately but I can't read it on my Sony PRS-700. Any help would be welcome.
thx
