Another Chesterton quote.

This was quoted in another thread.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night and this could perhaps have a similar interpretation O body swayed to music, O brightening glance, How can we know the dancer from the dance? -W. B. Yeats, Among School Children and Pretend to be good always, and even God will be fooled. -Kurt Vonnegut, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater Last edited by BenG; 06-08-2010 at 01:20 PM. |

.....Segregation, it must be remembered, might be practiced occasionally by blacks, but it was not invented by blacks and it should not be left solely up to blacks to disinvent it.
..........— Clarence Page (1947 - ), American journalist, syndicated columnist, senior member of The Chicago Tribune editorial board. From his column published in The Virginian-Pilot/Ledger-Star, October 3, 1993.

I might repeat to myself, slowly and soothingly, a list of quotations beautiful from minds profound; if I can remember any of the damn things.

Jack Benny and Rochester (Eddie Anderson)
.....Benny was always very sensitive to audiences' responses to Rochester onstage and off. During a USO tour during the Second World War, he bawled out a GI for making racist remarks about Rochester and humiliated many a hotel clerk into letting Anderson stay at the same hotel with the rest of the company. Historian Gerald Nachman remarked that after World War II, "Benny decided that he would take away all the stereotypical parts of the Rochester character and concentrate on the one brilliant stroke—which is that Benny was really a servant to Rochester."
..........— Michael Kantor and Laurence Maslon on Jack Benny and Edmund "Eddie" Lincoln Anderson. Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America (2008), based on the PBS series of the same name. The roles of black actors of that era were largely confined to subservient types. Anderson's "Rochester van Jones" character frequently turned that stereotype on its head with his keen wit, sharp retorts, and impeccable comedic timing.

.....GAZE not on Beauty too much, lest it blast thee; nor too long lest it blind thee; nor too near, lest it burnne thee; if thou like it, it deceives thee; if thou love it, it disturbes thee; if thou lust after it, it destroyes thee; if virtue accompany it, it is the Heart’s Paradise; if Vice associate it, it is the Soule’s Purgatory: it is the Wiseman’s Bonefire, and the Foole’s Furnace.
..........— Francis Quarles (1592-1644), English poet. Enchyridion (1641), Book III: The Third Century, Chapter IX.
