MacDonald, George: Paul Faber, Surgeon. 23 July 2007
The sequel to Thomas Wingfold, Curate. About an admirable doctor who is an unbeliever. Many discussions between him and Christians.
And MacDonald's insights on other things I find remarkable as well:
"The passion of love is but the vestibule--the pylon--to the temple of love. A garden lies between the pylon and the adytum. They that will enter the sanctuary must walk through the garden. But some start to see the roses already withering, sit down and weep and watch their decay, until at length the aged flowers hang drooping all around them, and lo! their hearts are withered also, and when they rise they turn their backs on the holy of holies, and their feet toward the gate."
In the original gutenberg version, italics were marked by underscores. Running it through an online formatter fixed it. MacDonald makes extensive use of the phrase dash--as opposed to the 2-word dash, both of which Book Designer converts into a word dash. So the trick of replacing '--' in MS Word with '@@' and then, in Book Designer, replacing that with ' - ' worked perfectly. Thanks for the tip.
