how to convert azw files?

Hello All,
I am trying to figure out how to convert azw files to other formats. I belive that once i strip the drm, i should be able to use calibre to convert the file.

First question, is that true, can i use calibre to convert an azw file that has been stripped of the drm?

Second question, How do i strip the drm?

Yes, you can strip the DRM from most AZW files. And, once you have, you'll have a standard MobiPocket file that Calibre can convert to LRF, ePub, etc. You won't be able to get direct instructions on how to strip DRM at this site, but try googling mobidedrm for some help.

There should a little app that could do this a lot quicker.

Since AZW is MOBI, mobidedrm can strip AZW DRM. I don't know if Calibre recognizes .azw as a valid filename extension. If not, then rename DRM-free .azw files to .mobi (or .prc). When using mobidedrm this can be done as part of the command.

It does since a fairly recent update. .137 or something.

AZW1 are Topaz files, so no, they can only be read on the Kindle.

Can you use Calibre? I think this is a free ware if u use this for solving your probleam.

Its best to just use .mobi rather then .azw, as for cracking drm check my sig and calibre will do all the conversions you need.

As ahintz suggested, to remove DRM from a Kindle 1/2/DX AZW use mobidedrm.py. If you don't have a Kindle, there are a couple of ways to remove the DRM from Kindle for PC AZW's and the easiest to use is unswindle.pyw.

A DRM-free AZW is a MOBI, and Calibre can convert it to whatever format you want.
