True, it's an estimate, right? I don't think archive.org allows to go back in time on a day by day basis.

Things have changed quite a lot in five years.
Its was all PDA,PDA,PDA back then and not a drop of e-ink to go around
I didn't realise mobipocket store and fictionwise were full into the selling of ebooks back then.

In 2004, I had heard of eBooks and had downloaded a couple from PG and Baen. I even had Mobipocket Reader and Rocket Reader installed on my computer, but found that I was not interested in reading on the computer monitor, so I just stuck with paper books. I never had a PDA, so didn't even know that book-reading software existed for it. Once the Kindle came out, I was hooked.

2004... That was also the last year of major new PDA release with the release of the Hx4700, the X50V & the Loox 720. Since then the market totally switched to smartphones. Luckily for us the e-ink devices started to become mainstream soon thereafter.

I was reading on a Toshiba e800 back then.

I have ebooks that I bought from Fictionwise in Jan 2003, and I'm pretty sure they'd been around for at least a year or two before that.
