Pwned is indeed a 'typo' that apparently first appeared in a World of Warcraft chat. It means 'to own' or 'dominate'.

Sorry, it is not a typo. People use it deliberately. How do you think most words come into existence? The first person starts using it, then everyone starts using it, and before you know it, it is part of the lexicon and added to the dictionary.

Personally, I don't like the word either, but... the English lexicon is not up to us to describe.
