Ok, since I only made 1 nomination so far and I want to see more books for the vote and I like Richard Herley's Refuge so much I will nominate:

The Penal Colony by Richard Herley

It is 1997. The British government now runs island prison colonies to take dangerous offenders from its overcrowded mainland jails.
Among all these colonies, Sert, 25 miles off the north Cornish coast, has the worst reputation. There are no warders. Satellite technology is used to keep the convicts under watch. New arrivals are dumped by helicopter and must learn to survive as best they can.
To Sert, one afternoon in July, is brought Anthony John Routledge, sentenced for a sex-murder he did not commit.
Routledge knows he is here for ever. And he knows he must quickly forget the rules of civilized life.
But not all the islanders are savages. Under the charismatic leadership of one man a community has evolved. A community with harsh and unyielding rules, peopled by resourceful men for whom the hopeless dream of escape may not be so hopeless after all ...

AND:

The Moon and the Sun by Vonda McIntyre
1997 Nebula Award winner

Set in Versailles, France, in 1693, The Moon and the Sun tells the story of a Marie-Josephe, a lady-in-waiting to the niece of Louis XIV -- the Sun King. Marie-Josephe's brother, Father Yves de la Croix, is a Jesuit and also the King's natural philosopher and explorer. He has brought the King a living sea woman and a dead male, both captured on an ocean voyage. So begins a rich tale of conscience, politics, science, history, and love.

Neptune's Crossing is already on the Vote list. Perhaps you would like to second one of my nominations above?

In the interest of having more choice for folks, there's a lot of Sci-Fi on the current list, I'll add a nomination for Catherine M. Wilson's When Women Were Warriors: Book 1 The Warrior's Path.

She is offering the first book free in PRC and PDF in a thread here...
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...light=warriors

...the book can be downloaded here...
http://www.catherinemwilson.com/free-ebook.html

The PRC seems to convert well to LRF and EPUB in Calibre.

Quote:
“In ancient days, when only women were warriors … ”
“When was that?”
“I don’t know. A long time ago, I suppose.”
“How long ago?”
“I have no idea. It’s not important. It’s just the way you start a story.”
“Why?”
“All stories begin like that.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. They just do.”

In Book I of the trilogy, Tamras, our hero, arrives in Merin’s house to begin her apprenticeship as a warrior, but her small stature causes many, including Tamras herself, to doubt that she will ever become a competent swordswoman. To make matters worse, the Lady Merin assigns her the position of companion, little more than a personal servant, to a woman who came to Merin’s house, seemingly out of nowhere, the previous winter, and this stranger wants nothing to do with Tamras.

Tamras’s journey begins with the smallest of steps. She sets aside her disappointment and performs as well as she can the humble tasks given her, and eventually she succeeds in winning the trust and then the friendship of the cantankerous warrior to whom she has been assigned.

In the first year of her journey, Tamras will make a series of choices that often seem insignificant, but they will flow from her character and from her good intentions, and they will determine her destiny.

Aren't those just short stories? I guess you could nominate them, but I would prefer if we stick to Novels.

I'll third Penal Colony (it's currently on my to-read list anyway...)
And I'll second The Moon and the sun

Ah, sorry about that. Must have misunderstood the rules. I thought there was a draw between several nominees, including Neptune Crossing.

Fledchen, Vonda McIntyre's MR user name is vondamcintyre.

Consider this a third for Vonda.

I think there is a little bit of confusion about how the book selection process works.

The first round is the nominations round. This is the thread in which people can make suggestions and recommendations. After three people have nominated a book, it goes on to the voting round. During the nominations round, nominations don't get counted after 3 people suggest the same book.

The second round is the voting round. Every qualifying book from the nominations round gets put in a poll, and the single book with the most votes after a week is the one that will be read in the next month.

Fledchen, Vonda McIntyre's The Moon And The Sun should be through to the voting round. Pilot Bob nominated it in post #32, ShortNCuddlyAm seconded in post #41 and I gave it a third in post #43.

That makes a total of seven books in the voting round, so far.
