Someone somewhere upthread liked the John Jordan series by Michael Lister. Here's a collection of six titles in the series, titled (oddly enough ) Six John Jordan Mysteries, which has just dropped to $0.99. Per eReaderIQ, this never stays on sale very long, so grab it if you want it! It's the first six titles, BTW, and details are in the blurb...

Six novels in the critically-acclaimed John Jordan series from award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Michael Lister.

Includes a Special Introduction by Michael Connelly

POWER IN THE BLOOD

A missing mom and a suspicious death force a reluctant detective out of self-imposed exile in this fast-paced mystery thriller.

Detective John Jordan thought he had put murder investigation behind him for good—his own good. Leaving Atlanta, he returns to Florida in search of the serenity that has so long eluded him.

Until he witnesses the shocking and bizarre death of an inmate in state prison custody and is asked to find a missing mom by her young children. John realizes he can't run from his true calling any longer. Now he must determine if the suspicious death he witnessed is murder, accident, or suicide and what really happened to Candace Miles on the night she vanished off the face of the earth—even if it costs him his life to do so.

Start reading this exciting, stand-alone whodunit today and see why millions of readers adore John Jordan.

BLOOD OF THE LAMB

What if you couldn't protect the vulnerable, innocent young girl in your care?

Old ghosts resurface to haunt detective John Jordan when a vulnerable young girl he's trying to protect is murdered in what seems an impossible manner.

John Jordan’s search for serenity is interrupted by the unimaginable murder of Nicole Caldwell, the adopted daughter of televangelist Bobby Earl Caldwell. The inconceivable murder is committed inside John’s own locked office while he’s trying to protect her.

The thrilling investigation leads John down some dark paths, but as he closes in on the killer, he becomes a target himself.

Can John survive long enough to get justice for Nicole?

FLESH AND BLOOD

How do you handle things you can't explain or understand?

John Jordan is back—investigating eternal mysteries woven into the fabric of everyday life. Within the confines of seemingly ordinary cases, John explores the ineffable and inexplicable, the profoundly mysterious within the mundane.

As John investigates these diverse, compelling cases, and battles depression and alcoholism, he becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation.

THE BODY AND THE BLOOD

Could you betray yourself for someone you love?

Can John solve an impossible murder committed in a locked cell right before his very eyes? Will he be willing to once he learns the price he’ll have to pay?

BLOOD SACRIFICE

Do you beleive demon posession could lead to murder?

Was the troubled young Tammy Taylor a victim of an exorcism gone horribly wrong or cold-blooded murder? John Jordan must exorcise his own demons to find out.

RIVERS TO BLOOD

Would you risk your life to save a family member even if you knew they had committed a serious crime?

What do a daring prison escape and a shocking lynching have in common? Only the inimitable John Jordan can figure it out!

The Hammond Innes Collection Volume Two, containing The Lonely Skier, Campbell’s Kingdom, and The Blue Ice, has dropped to $3.99 at Kindle US. As of now it has not dropped at Kobo, although the other volumes (One, Three and Four) which have recently been on sale, were all on sale at both Kindle and Kobo. Don't know if Kobo will eventually drop as well; I'll provide a link for price-check purposes. The price drops on these don't seem to last very long, though...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DVWCQHB
Kobo US (price-check): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...ion-volume-two

If it does drop at Kobo, it should be coupon/VIPable...

The Dead on Leave: Dangerous times need dangerous men appears to be a non-series title by Chris Nickson, although it's not listed on his extensive SYKM page. In any case, it's free right now at both Kindle US and UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DGK363X

Quote:
‘Fascinating tale of murder and deception set against the political tensions between Mosley’s Blackshirts and working-class Communists in 1930s Leeds. Perfectly captures the atmosphere of a city struggling to shake off the effects of the Great Depression.’ – A.J. Wright, bestselling author of Sitting Murder

Leeds, Autumn 1936.

During a British Union of Fascists rally, a body is found.

War veteran Detective Sergeant Urban Raven is tasked with finding the killer.

But with virtually no clues, no witnesses and no obvious motive, he has few leads to start the investigation.

Leeds has become a shadow of its former self. Once a bright, vibrant and progressive metropolis, it has all but ground to a halt since the Crash of ’29, the Depression and the ensuing descent into unemployment and poverty.

And there are political stirrings as the BUF vie with the Communist Party for public support.

Was the murder an act of vengeance?

Was the victim killed for his political beliefs?

Or was the killing part of a more sinister plan, a grisly smear campaign? And if so, which side, if either, is responsible?

Raven and his colleagues find themselves constantly hindered by red tape, politics and the press. But sometimes, if you want a result, you just have to do it your way…

This puzzler of a crime story comprises convincing characters, a clever plot and a window into the dark days of 1930s northern England, where so many had lost hope…

…the dead. On leave.

Chris Nickson, author of the Richard Nottingham series, was born and raised in Leeds, England. A well-known music journalist and author, he’s written many celebrity biographies as well as being a frequent contributor to numerous music magazines.

Anyone read Ken Bruen? I have a couple of the Hard Case Crime books he wrote, but haven't read them yet.

A number of his books are on sale for $1.99 each at Amazon US. This is an Open Road sale, so likely it's today only.

The ones that look most tempting to me are:

A Fifth of Bruen: A collection of short stories and novellas
Tower: A novel he cowrote. It tells the same story twice, with each author telling the tale from a different character's perspective
Rilke on Black: A kidnapping tale that goes awry
American Skin: Scum trying to hide in Arizona while other scum pursues them
A White Arrest: Two old cops trying to make a big arrest that will get them on TV

Cross-post to the "Other Fiction" thread for an estate-authorized Wodehouse/Bertie/Jeeves follow-on that seems to have a bit of spoof mystery/thriller to it. Per the blurb:

Quote:
"...the Junior Ganymede Club (an association of England's finest butlers and valets) is revealed to be an elite arm of the British secret service. Jeeves must ferret out a Fascist spy embedded in the highest social circles, and only his hapless employer, Bertie, can help."

Two titles in the Cork County mystery series by Sheila Connolly have dropped in price at Kindle US.

Cruel Winter, #5, $1.99: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU8WVIL
Spoiler:
Quote:
Snow is a rarity in Maura Donovan's small village in County Cork, Ireland, so she wasn't sure what to expect when a major snowstorm rolled in around Sullivan's pub. But now she's stranded in a bar full of patrons—and a suspected killer in a long-ago murder.

Maura's been in Ireland less than a year and hasn't heard about the decades-old unsolved crime that took place nearby, let alone the infamous suspect, Diane Caldwell. But the locals have, and they're not happy to be trapped with her. Diane, meanwhile, seeks to set the record straight, asserting her innocence after all this time. And since no one is going anywhere in the storm, Maura encourages Diane to share her side of the story, which she'd never had a chance to do in court.

Over the next few hours, the informal court in Sullivan's reviews the facts and theories about the case—and comes to some surprising conclusions. But is it enough to convince the police to take a new look at an old case? A clever spin on the classic locked room mystery, Cruel Winter, the fifth in New York Times bestselling author Sheila Connolly's series, will delight fans of the Emerald Isle.

Many a Twist, #6, $2.99: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072LTRZXS
Spoiler:
Quote:
How far would you go to protect your family?

Pub owner Maura Donovan hasn’t seen her mother for over twenty years, so when she suddenly shows up in Maura’s pub, Maura’s not sure what to expect. Her mother has moved back home and has taken a position working with the new owners of the Crann Mor hotel just outside Skibbereen. Creating a new lift for herself was working out fine—until her new boss is found dead in the gardens, dumped down the hillside behind the hotel.

Now, Maura must leave no stone unturned to clear her mother’s name and rebuild their fragmented relationship. However, in County Cork, things are rarely as they seem. Longtime residents, including the employees of Maura’s pub and the deceased hotel owner, have dark, bottled-up family secrets that must never be uncorked. Worse, someone is willing to kill to keep them that way.

Maura Donovan tests the bonds of love and family in Many a Twist, the charming and atmospheric sixth County Cork mystery from New York Times bestselling author Sheila Connolly.

Up until about a year or year-and-a-half ago, most or all of the titles in Jason Vail's Stephen Attebrook historical mystery series were $0.99 at Kindle US. They then went up in price, mostly to around $2.99, but now seven of the eight titles have dropped in price again, the first one to $0.99 and the next six to $1.09, leaving only the most recent eighth title at $2.99. I believe these are self-pub, but I have read the first several titles, in a binge reading session when I had a cold one time, and I enjoyed them all.

Here's a link for the seven: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?sea...price-asc-rank

And also all £0.99 at Kindle UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search/?s...price-asc-rank

The Florida Panhandle Mystery Series is a compilation of three titles in the Florida Panhandle series by Michaela Thompson.
  • Hurricane Season
  • Riptide
  • Heat Lightning
At least a couple of these were originally published under the pen name Mickey Friedman.

The compilation is free right now at Kindle US and UK...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Florida-Panha...dp/B07S5JQ2DK/
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Florida-Pan...dp/B07S5JQ2DK/

Spoiler:
Quote:
WHAT HAPPENS IN FLORIDA…

…could only happen in Florida. St. Elmo, specifically. Just like in the 50s, it’s still the kind of place where a date might be a picnic of tuna sandwiches, and the sheriff the son of an old friend. In the hands of mystery author Michaela Thompson, St. Elmo comes alive with a smattering of “only in Florida” puzzlers: a bootleg war in a hurricane, sunken treasure by a trailer park, a handful of illicit love affairs fraught with seaside small town gossip. As vibrant as their Florida Panhandle backdrop, this series is made up of traditional mysteries notable for the kind of delicately-crafted writing that’ll remind you of Golden Age British yarns, now bundled in a single box set.

HURRICANE SEASON
The 1950s fairly leap off the page in this classic cozy mystery set in northern Florida in the Eisenhower era, complete with Johnny Ray on the jukebox and a Womanless Wedding—this one interrupted by an explosion at a moonshine still. Lily Trulock, owner of Trulock’s Grocery & Marine Supply, leads a pretty quiet life until a stranger comes to town. The new guy’s not what he appears, but then, some of St. Elmo’s residents aren’t either.

RIPTIDE
As intricate as a fisherman’s net, Riptide fairly writhes with sinister delights—family secrets, family feuds, lost family fortunes, betrayals, puzzles, sunken treasure… and murder, of course. With a bit of illicit romance and treachery thrown in for seasoning. This rife atmosphere swirls around New york artist Isabel Anders, who’s summoned home to tiny St. Elmo, Florida to deal with an emergency: the aunt who raised her has been brutally—and mysteriously—injured.

HEAT LIGHTNING
In all the years of their marriage, Clara Trent’s husband failed to mention his involvement in a murder—and now he’s not only dead himself, but accused of committing it. When St. Elmo sheriff’s investigator Aaron Malone re-opens the 40-year-old cold case, Ronan Trent’s named—posthumously—as the killer of his previous lover, a vivacious blonde with a jealous husband. Clara’s discovery of sensuous drawings of the woman, unlike any of her husband’s other work, reveals a carefully concealed obsession.
