There are now firmware updates for the Kindle PW2, now at 5.4.5, and the Kindle Touch now at 5.3.7.2

Yeah, I like this as well. It won't make a difference most of the time, but will occasionally come in quite handy.

It's especially helpful for non-fiction reading if you want to look at photo groupings or future chapters. Sometimes you click a link that jumps to the end appendices. Now I won't have to manually clear the last read page anymore.

Maybe he is not.
It should be possible to downgrade the device to 5.4.3.2 with a dirty little trick.

The trick is to reboot Kindle with power button after the update file is fully copied but before framework gets chance to analyse it (i.e. before ejecting from PC).
On Windows you will have to wait few minutes to make sure the disk cache is flushed (or to use a tool to achieve that), on Linux it is possible to unmount the filesytem without ejecting it.

In the past, if I clicked a footnote, my latest page synced was NOT affected. How is this different? I still notice a menu item to click to latest page.

I never had to clear the last page read in the past.
