What's with the Karma?

So what's the deal with the karma?
I can give some users Karma, but what's the meaning behind it?

Not much. It's just a fun way of saying you appreciate someone for posting or putting up a book you've been looking for. In the Lounge there's a sticky with a fairly long-winded discussion about karma that tells you a lot about it.

karma is simply a way of expressing appreciation of a post or poster. it has no concrete utility and doesn't correspond to anything else. the closest you can get to a meaning are the karma fortunes which you can read if you hover your mouse cursor over the blue rectangles under a member's name : Teh Karma knows all.

edit : and what pshrynk said.
