Device: Kindle E-ink
PDF -> AWZ3: no go-to page option

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here. I bought a Kindle e-ink last week. I spent a month trying to figure out what's the best device for me. I have some pdf textbooks that I read on the subway, but because i can't open a laptop on the subway during rush hour, and I don't want to keep printing my readings every morning, I decided to buy the Kindle (originally wanted the ipad air or nexus 7 but couldn't justify the price for just reading pdfs).

Anyways, now that I have it, I tried uploading a few pdfs to it. The font was too small and it couldn't be changed, so I googled and found that I have to convert my pdf files to awz3. I used Calibre and, aside from having to wait 55 minutes, I now have a pdf file that doesn't contain any of the graphs and exhibits, and I also don't have the option to go to any page numbers. When I press the 'go to' function, the go to page function is not selectable.

If these are the problems with pdfs that have no easy and quick fixes, then I might have to reconsider my kindle

Thanks for your help.

You will find that PDF files are prone to not format well - particularly ones with any complex layout or embedded images. you might want to read the sticky on PDF conversion.

In my experience pure text like novels tend to convert well, but more than that produces results that are not very good.

Hmmm then maybe I should stick with the iPad!

You really should have asked here BEFORE buying. We would have told you that:

1. No 6" reader is good for PDFs.
2. PDF is a "terminal" format and doesn't convert well to other formats.

If you need to convert PDF to a reflowable format, the best results are generally obtained by using a good OCR program.

I read my academic PDFs on my iPad. Best device for the job.

In addition, PDF has the concept of page numbers, (because it has rigidly defined structure/look) but AZW3 does not, as it's reflowable.

Unless Amazon generates you a sidecar .apnx file (this happens with purchased books), creating an index of arbitrary locations declared to be new pages.

You could try the Kindle DX which has a bigger screen and is meant for reading PDFs. It will definitely work better than the PW(, though a tablet is still best). It costs $199.
