It (net.eth2) didn't exist, so I created it (symlink to net.lo, like net.eth0 and net.eth1) but it failed with 'no such device' as did net.eth0 and net.eth1.

I assume you have an enabled ethernet bridged device in your vm settings for this VM?

What does lspci | grep Eth give you (as root)

EDIT and while you're about it

dmesg | grep -i eth as well

It shows a 79c970 AMD adapter (PCNet32 Lance). I also did a modprobe on the vm* modules in the misc directory. All loaded, but still a big fail on bringing up an eth interface. Sorry I don't know gentoo, I'm debian/ubuntu/(years past):slackware.

Fixed. For some reason, eth0 was renamed eth4 by udev ???

Anyway, I created net.eth4 and have a network connection
