Twobob, thankyou for your help with this, after much hacking I have managed to get it to work.

To get it working I set up a DSN server to redirect the traffic from the kindle to IP address for my access point. The address from the address from the kindle was "dogvgb9ujhybx.cloudfront.net" which basically ends up pointing at "spectrum.s3.amazonaws.com/kindle-wifi/wifistub.html".

I then copied the wifistub.html page and had a pyton script serve it up when requested by the kindle.

it then attempted to go to amazon.com which I also redirected with the DNS server.

I didn't mention before what I am actually up to, well I am using a Raspberry Pi to broadcast the data from my GPS as a web page and am then using the Kindle as a screen to view it. The inspiration and most of the python script came from http://www.holdentechnology.com/comp...h-nook-display.

So thanks again.

How did you know my name was Luke? Are you my father?

Anyway...most of the web server stuff for the GPS can be downloaded from the link above, I changed the port to 80 and added some lines to feed up the wifistub.html page.

I will see if I can get something reasonable together.

lookout,

I am trying to do something similar and I am having the same problem with getting the wifi to stay connected. I have a Digital Yacht WLN10 wifi data module which takes in serial data (NMEA) and broadcasts it. I can see the WLN10 (which is based on a Wifly module) hand out a DHCP address to the K4NT and the K4NT connects for about 15 seconds before it disconnects. I can see in the K4NT that it registered the network ssid and ip address correctly. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to sort it out.

FWIW, I am trying to make a yacht instrument display that I can read in bright sunlight. My approach is to read in NMEA data and then construct a PNG file in memory for direct display on the K4NT. The PNG part is working well with random data and updates fast enough to do what it needs to do on the yacht. If I can get the wifi input to work I should be OK. I am using Python (for the first time) and my Python skills are next to nothing. Mostly I am just copying and pasting other peoples ideas.

So I am very interested in your 'DNS server' to fool the Kindle into thinking it has a validated connection. I am really hoping that you can post some code on how your server works.

Have you considered adding speaker independent, voice recognition, control?

In 1991 I assisted the owner of the 110 foot "boat" (anything over 100 feet is actually called a "ship") Alpha Centauri with such a system.

Twenty years ago it required specialized computer equipment, provided by Voice Control Systems of Dallas, Texas.

Today, it can be done with a Kindle touch.

I still have a bit more hacking to do, I can get it working for about 15 to 20 min then the WIFI drops out so I haven't captured everything yet, I will post my workings to date when I get a chance, I didn't take very good notes so it should be fun..... It is good to see that I am not the only one wanting to do something like this.

Twobob, you mentioned in your original reply that "I vaguely recall that it retrieves the same construct from the same location every time." do you have any more info on this, maybe I can do something at the AP to emulate the Amazon service.
Well I managed to get a text search going previously and output the file I attached, but I just cannot seem to do it again, I am obviously doing something stupid. Every time I try the kindle just hangs and I need to restart it again. The following is a cut and past from the terminal window:

[root@[192_168_15_244] root]# cd /
[root@[192_168_15_244] /]# ls
bin cust dev etc lib mnt opt proc sbin sys tmp usr var

its proc. you are getting lost in there - or sys - remove from search.

some of those device declarations in proc (or was it sys?) are infinitely recursive.
