Please explain why do you need dhcp?

Just specify mac address when starting usbnet:

insmod $driver_root/g_ether.ko host_addr=46:0d:9e:67:69:eb dev_addr=46:0d:9e:67:69:ec

I set up usbnet and it works well with network manager on my ubuntu.

Mac address is only one part. On windows and most likely on linux as well, if I don't use dhcpd the pc will choose a random address, that might not be in the same subnet as the kobo, thus making it hard to get a connection. With dhcpd running, this will not be an issue. Giving the connection a fixed address on the pc side is just another unecessary step for the user that the dhcpd makes unnecessary.

@sergey,

The way you bring up the usb interface and stop it afterwards collides with the autousbnet scripts. You should either start a new thread for this or change your script so it works together with my scripts.
This will also break usb mass storage completely, which is exactly the opposite of what autousbnet is supposed to do. It might be easier to kick off indexing after bringing down the interface.

Question IP range

cannot connect over IP.
IP range in my network is 192.168.156.x - and I assume one can
change that in /etc/udhcpd.conf?

start 192.168.156.20 #default: 192.168.0.20
end 192.168.156.254 #default: 192.168.0.254

In line 86 of /etc/udhcpd.conf I see
option subnet 255.255.0.0
I have a subnet 255.255.255.0
So should I change the subnet option accordingly?

Is it possible to (disable DHCP and) set a single IP in the config file,
maybe by setting "start" and "end" to the same IP?
Reason: I have DHCP disabled on my Windows network adapter.

@Koboyashi
the usb network is a different network from your LAN/WLAN and should use a different IP range.
What I noticed is that it sometimes takes a long time for Win7 to pick up the correct IP.
There's no need to change the dhcp config of the kobo.
The USB net is an extra network adapter, where you can either configure DHCP or a fixed address in the range of 192.168.142.1-254 independently of other network adapters.
If you set a fixed address on your PC there's no need to disable DHCP on the kobo.

I've reset to the original /etc/udhcpd.conf and installed a driver for the
USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget (Windows found no driver) but still no luck.
Trying to "repair" the Windows network adapter shows nothing to repair.

Where do I see what IP windows has picked up? Do I have to configure
an extra network under Windows?

The easiest way to get the IP is to call "ipconfig" from a command line. It'll probably be called something like "LAN-connection 2".
Or go to "Network and sharing center"->"Adapter settings" -> right-click on the connection (there should be at least two) -> Status -> Details
It can take one or two minutes until windows gets the correct IP. I have no idea why, but it seens the first DHCP request doesn't get through and the next one takes a while.

Hmm, I see a "LAN-connection 2". But after about 2 seconds Windows shows "Netzwerkkabel wurde entfernt". Output from ipconfig /all:
Code:
Ethernet-Adapter LAN-Verbindung 2:

   Medienstatus. . . . . . . . . . . : Medium getrennt
   Verbindungsspezifisches DNS-Suffix:
   Beschreibung. . . . . . . . . . . : USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget
   Physikalische Adresse . . . . . . : 22-A8-5F-66-A7-BA
   DHCP aktiviert. . . . . . . . . . : Ja
   Autokonfiguration aktiviert . . . : Ja

The connection is activated. Deactivating and re-activating changes nothing - remains disconnected.
