I changed them to ctl/alt/L and ctl/alt/V because they clashed with Windows shortcuts

Oh that I knew. And changed because as you just said and I already mentioned in Windows these are already default keyboard shortcuts. I thought you were referring to something else.

Maybe you mean the Set & Clear Date short cuts - these will be in next release, equivalent of the two buttons you get for custom column dates in the Edit Metadata dialogues, but on the book list cell. I think KG said Set is '=' and Clear is '-'.

But is there any way to change the color of the highlight? It's way too dark for me.

I just upgraded on my laptop and my desktop, and it was fine on my laptop and too dark on my desktop. I have windows 7 but I use the Windows Classic interface because using Aero it says you can change background colors, but it lies - it only changes it on some windows. Anyway, in the Control Panel I went into Display, Personalization and choose Window Color on the bottom of the screen. In there there is a drop down labeled Item. Choose Selected Items and you can choose both the background color and text color. I made the background dark and the text light, and now Calibre looks good.
