After Germany, Sony will launch in France mid-September

According to Philippe Citroën, director of Sony France, the Sony liseuse should be available in France around mid-september, for 300€.

The newspaper Le Figaro who reported the news was unable to find out whether it would be sold by large chain stores like the Fnac ; according to M. Citroën, they are still finalising a distribution deal.

I'm thrilled to see another liseuse appearing on the marken in France but I really hope that price will go down before the launch : 300€ is significantly more expensive than the US price or even the UK price. Although if there is enough publicity, perhaps at least more people will become aware of ebooks, even if they don't buy a Sony (unless it's imported from the states ). More public exposure and more competition is what ebooks need after all !

I wonder if the Sony reader is really attractive enough to ignore exchange rates. Sony is not Apple - but I also wonder how Apple could maintain their fantasy prices so far

But maybe my fellow-Europeans are so shocked by the iLiad price tag that the Sony's looks cheap.

Does anyone have a rough idea what the current production cost of the PRS-505 is?

i'll be very interested as well to see the reaction to that price. i personally find it frankly outrageous. with the current exchange rate, if i buy one from B&H photo, INCLUDING SHIPPING to France (40.65$), the total is 335.60$ which comes out to around 235€. now please someone tell me why i would want to spend 300€ for the exact same product, just because i buy it in france ? are you listening, sony ????

Don’t you love global markets: one buys from “China” instead of their own country (who does produces and sells the item), have it sent to him from the other side of the world and still pay 1/2 of if they whould just go out into the street and buy the bloody thing next door!

Just joking…

Anyway, great that France is next! Can not wait to see the thing selling in my country too… we have FNAC and I bet if they go with FNAC in France, ours will have it in no time… at least it’s the experience I have with this chain.

it's official ! the sony will be launched in september in France, in Fnac stores, for 300€. other detail of interest : the partnership between Sony and Hachette publishers, who will provide content for the Sony. dare we dream of actual ebooks in french ????
