Thumbs up Kindle Comic Converter v2.6 - convert CBZ/CBR/PDFs comics to PanelView Mobi
KCC (a.k.a. KindleComicConverter) is a Python app to convert comic files or folders to ePub or Panel View Mobipocket.
It also optimizes comic images by:
  • enhancing contrast
  • cutting page numbering
  • cropping white borders
  • resizing larger images to device's native resolution
  • quantizing images to device's palette

KCC was initally developed for Kindle but as of version 2.2 it outputs valid ePub 2.0 so despite its name, KCC is actually a comic2epub converter that every ereader owner can happily use.

  • 2.4: Use temporary directory as workdir (fixes converting from external volumes and zipfiles renaming)
    Fixed "add folders" from GUI.
  • 2.5: Added --black-borders option to set added borders black when page's ratio is not the device's one (#11).
    Fixed epub containing zipped itself (#10).
  • 2.6: Added --rotate option to rotate landscape images instead of splitting them.
    Added --output option to customize ePub output dir/file.
    Add rendition:layout and rendition:orientation ePub meta tags (supported by new kindlegen 2.8)

AWKCC is C# (.NET 4.0) KCC wrapper/GUI.

This small monster exist only because due lack of my Python skills I can't implement everything I want directly to KCC code also because Python GUIs are ugly :-)
This was my totally private program but I thought that maybe somebody else want to use it too.

Download: AWKCC 1.6
Package contain everything needed - Excluding KindleGen. Download it from here.



Currently AWKCC conversion process looks like this:
  1. Additional pre-KCC cleaning of file and directory names.
  2. Creating EPUB file - KCC
  3. Checking if EPUB file size will not break KindleGen.
  4. Creating MOBI file - KindleGen
  5. Removing SRCS header - KindleStrip
  6. Modifying EXTH headers* - Mobi2Mobi
* - This step should remove "Personal" tag. But it seems that standard method (113, 501, 504) don't work in comic type MOBI. If anybody have any ideas - I'm listening.

Important tips:
  • Disabling HQ Panel View will highly decrease size of output file. Consider it when Panel View support is not needed.
  • Only PNG, JPG, TIFF, GIF and BMP files will be parsed correctly. I highly discourage CBZ and CBR files.
  • Input directory name will be book name.
  • First image will be cover.
  • All files/directories will be added to EPUB in alphabetical order.
  • Ready MOBI file should be uploaded by USB connection. Other methods might corrupt it.
  • If you converting color images and the end result is not satisfactory - experiment with Gamma correction option. First try 1.0 setting.

Having problems creating the mobi file

No such file or directory ....C:/.../.comic.mobi

epub file is fine.

Using PC

Its working perfectly, I tried it on a manga and navigation is now manga style as well as panel mode is also from right to left. Also landscape mode is working too. Thanks!!

PS: Got the same error as above poster on my second attempt.

PPS: Seems like problem was because archive contained files with weird characters in file-name (probably Japanese as its not displaying correctly on my laptop). Changing the names corrected it. Also it will be helpful if you can add drag & drop support for adding new files or folders.

Found two bugs in 2.6 release. One fix is already pushed to repo. And I'm working on second one - Landscape blank-page-before-spit is still here in some cases :S

Win32 build is already recompiled with that first fix.

I know what the problem is. I do not have kindlegen or unrar.

I've downloaded them now, but what do I do with them?

EDIT: I just put it in the same folder and now it works! Thanks.
