got a kindle secondhand but what about data?
My sister ended up loading a ton of books on it - she browsed sites for free e-books and there's quite a few on it. I'd like to reset it to factory settings though so my mother can personalize it with her name and all instead of having my sister's name and such. I hooked it to my computer and copied all the files over. If I reset it to factory settings, can I simply copy the files back over to retain the e-books? If so, which folder(s) should I copy back over? And if not, how can I reset it without losing the books? |

Does your mom have an amazon account? IF yes then have your sister take it off her account then add it to you moms account & reste to factory. As for the e-books you can move them into you computer then transfer them back to the fire. BUT DONT remove them as a FILE! Do them one by one. BTW if your sister got them for free so can your mom lol

If the books are Amazon books and have DRM, there is no point to saving them on your computer and reloading them, they won't work. And when you reset to a new account, the books will be gone, also. You don't have to factory reset, just de-register and register to your mom.

Does my sister have to log into her Amazon account to remove the Kindle from there, or can it be done via the Kindle?
If the former, then which page is it on Amazon? Many thanks! |

It can be done either way. From Amazon go to Manage YouR Kindle, and then Manage Your Devices (on the left).

I don't know about the fire, but with my K3 and PW all I would have to do is go to menu>reset to factory default and everything would be wiped off of either of them.

Either way would work. If you factory reset, then it is unregistered from any account and the content is removed.
If you remove it from your sister's account, either from her web page on Amazon or from the device, your sister's account is gone and all her registered apps & books & etc. After doing either, re-register to your mom's account on Amazon. Once off your sister's account, none of her DRM stuff will work on that device, even if side loaded from your PC, since that's what DRM is for, to restrict the stuff to one person. Non-DRM books (if any) will continue to work. |

Quote:
Kindle DRM is usually described as each download being readable on only one /device/ So backing up a download, reregister device to a different account then restore/ copy the download to the device may well work (since the device serial number hasn't changed). |

I gave a friend my old Kindle and when I de-registered it (from the Kindle), all the books without Amazon DRM were not affected. I'm not sure if the same thing would happen on the Fire, so you should back up the books to be sure.
