It's quite tricky to calculate mentaly, also there is upper bound for extra dificulty. But teasing your brain does help!

With the exception of the last digit it does add what you give it. But, if your karma ends in an odd number it will always end in an odd number and vice-verse for even numbers. I'm sure it is explained in detail somewhere in this thread.
