Example: “Bob, I did not know you wore yellow suspenders,” Sally remarked. “Gee, Sally, those are not suspenders. I am wearing yellow underwear today,” Bob revealed. The dialogue above will help produce at least 100 more pages of dialogue. |

Not SF, more SF history, but of interest to fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs
Free on Kindle right now: Main UK John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood by Michael D. Sellars It took 100 years to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars to the big screen. It took Disney Studios just ten days to declare the film a flop and lock it away in the Disney vaults. How did this project, despite its quarter-billion dollar budget, the brilliance of director Andrew Stanton, and the creative talents of legendary Pixar Studios, become a calamity of historic proportions? Michael Sellers, a filmmaker and Hollywood insider himself, saw the disaster approaching and fought to save the project – but without success. In John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, Sellers details every blunder and betrayal that led to the doom of the motion picture – and that left countless Hollywood careers in the wreckage. JOHN CARTER AND THE GODS OF HOLLYWOOD examines every aspect of Andrew Stanton's adaptation and Disney's marketing campaign and seeks to answer the question: What went wrong? it includes a history of Hollywood's 100 year effort to bring the film to the screen, and examines the global fan movement spawned by the film. "John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood is a must-read for every fan of John Carter and Edgar Rice Burroughs, and every film buff intrigued by the "inside baseball" aspects of modern Hollywood."---RICHARD A. LUPOFF "A fair, factual, and enlightening assessment of what went wrong . . . the best corporate history I've read since Disney War." Daniel Butcher, Between Disney. "A winning book . . . . I have no reservations in recommending John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood. Even if you only remotely hold an interest in the film or the moviemaking method, do yourself a favor and purchase this book. I cannot remember an instance when I read 350 pages of anything in 24 hours, but my level of captivation in how methodically and interestingly the content was presented should substantiate why John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood is a must-read. Grade A." Brett Nachman, Geeks of Doom. Last edited by scottken; 02-06-2013 at 10:01 AM. Reason: Add UK Link |

Thanks. This looks really good.
I haven't seen the film yet, but the book looks a lot more interesting. Don

Greg - do you know if these books are OK to download for people outside the US?

I think these would still be under copyright in Canada and Germany as well as any where else that doesn't have rule of the shorter term with the US. I'm pretty sure Samuel R. Delany isn't going to do anything if you download and read them, but he would prefer you to read the newer ones that aren't up yet. The Ace editons these are from were cut pretty heavily to fit them into an Ace double. Greg |

Greg, many thanks for this. I am a mega fan of Gutenberg. Do you remember when we had to post snailmail the photocopy of the copyright page to Michael Hart in an envelope with coloured stripes so he could pick it out from his junk mail? Then upload the plain text file over a seriously slow link? I can recall about ten minutes per text file. Oh good grief, I must be getting old....
