Dogland by Will Shetterly is free today on Amazon Main UK

From Kirkus Reviews
Shetterly makes the transition from young adult (Elsewhere, 1991, etc.) to adult fantasy with assurance and aplomb. In 1959, Luke and Susan Nix travel with their family--four-year-old Chris, whose narrative is informed by hindsight; Little Bit, three; and Digger, two--to Dickison, Florida, to set up a tourist attraction: Dogland, a sort of canine zoo displaying dozens of different breeds of dog, along with a restaurant and gift shop. Their supportive neighbors include Maggie DeLyon, the Seminole owner of the Fountain of Youth motel, realtor Artie Drake, and the old black cook, Ethorne Hawkins, soon hired by Luke along with Ethorne's equally hardworking family, Mayella, James, and college boy Seth. ...Compelling, absorbing, hard-edged work, lit by glimpses of another, more fantastic reality: reminiscent of top-notch Orson Scott Card, child-centered but tackling adult themes fearlessly and with great charm.

Acorna: The Unicorn Girl by Anne McCaffrey and Margaret Ball is $0.99 right now.

Amazon | B&N | Kobo | Books on Board | Sony | Diesel

Quote:
It had started as a pleasure-cruise spaceship, but as the Khlevii moved closer to them it threatened to turn into a death chamber. They knew there was no hope for them, the adults, but they took a chance on their youngling, nestled her into a pod and ejected her into space before exploding themselves and the hated Khlevii with them.

It was three young space prospectors in an asteroid mining ship who hauled the piece of "space debris" aboard and opened it up. It contained an alien youngling. Silvery hair curled down over the shoulder-blades and, in the center of the forehead was the beginning of a small horn. The feet ended in tiny cleft hooves. The little alien was frightened, affectionate, and she was to become their mascot, their miracle girl. Many people on many planets wanted her and the mysterious powers she possessed, but Acorna had her own ideas of the tasks she was to accomplish in the worlds of space.

Free from Wild Wolf Publishing: Moon Bumps by James Marsden.

Quote:
Can time, space or even the world’s end separate something that was meant to be?

When Reclamation Officer Alli Katalli finds herself catapulted away from her life, her world and her fiancé, Jon, to the long-ago destroyed planet Earth, she faces more than just a few hundred years worth of time-difference to return home.

Believing her gone for good, Jon’s life spirals out of control as he struggles to let go of his feelings for Alli. As they battle individually to survive their separation, will those who endeavor to keep them apart succeed, or is the couples’ bond just too great?

A quirky offbeat story of love, time travel and the end of the world.
Although the description sounds like a romance, it's not categorized as one. The main part of the book may be what happens while they are separated.

Volumes 1 and 2 of the Mongolian trilogy by Neal Stephenson, Greg Bear, and others, are coming out today, at $2.99 for each volume. Volume 3 is $2.99 for preorder for 2/26, plus some other prequels at $.99 and $1.99 each. This started as an online serial and then was picked up by Amazon's 47North imprint.

See Conanfan's previous thread about this from May, when the first one was $.99.

Quote:
The epic Foreworld Saga that spans continents and centuries begins with the Mongoliad trilogy, set in 13th century Europe. This sweeping work of alternate history follows a small band of warriors and mystics as they raise their swords to save Europe from a bloodthirsty Mongol invasion. They embark on a perilous journey and uncover the history of hidden knowledge and conflict among powerful secret societies that had been shaping world events for millennia.
The Foreworld Saga.

Be careful with the shorts that you don't buy something you already have.
Sinner is included in Vol 1 and Dreamer in Vol 2.

Sinner: A Prequel to the Mongoliad (The Foreworld Saga) by Mark Teppo is free until 2/20.

Quote:
A severed head and a cry of “Witchcraft!” start a frenzied witchhunt in a sleepy German village. When Konrad von Marburg, a Church inquisitor, arrives on the scene, innocent and guilty alike find themselves subject to the inquisitor’s violent form of purification.

Two knights of the Ordo Militum Vindicis Intactae, Andreas and Raphael, soon arrive in the village. Though each journeys on a separate path, they quickly band together to confront the inquisitor as he whips the townspeople into a righteous bloodlust.

When her dead husband’s severed head appears on her doorstep, a local woman is charged with practicing heretical rituals, it is up to the knights to discover the truth behind the brutal murder before the torches are lit and the woman is burned at the stake.

Their task proves daunting, though, as the townspeople have their own long-buried secrets and sins that they want to keep hidden—even if it means allowing the sacrifice of an innocent woman.

With Sinner: A Prequel to the Mongoliad, Mark Teppo forges the first link in a chain that leads to the world-shattering events of the Mongoliad series.

Isn't the author still alive?

-- I read these when they first came out. Seems like only yesterday.
