I started Cold Days last night. Read about 100 pages before forcing myself to go to bed. Rather than mess with spoiler tags, I'll sum up my reactions so far with...

Cat Sith is awesome. I don't yet know how much of a role he has here, but that moment when he started to respect Harry was a pretty cool moment. I don't even know why I love the "Malk of all Malks" so much. Probably because, well, magical fae cat thing.

I really don't like the malk much as I don't care for anybody who kills for enjoyment, although he is a cool character.

As for your spoiler...

I agree, in the sense that I don't like that no matter who is doing it, but the Fae do pretty much everything for enjoyment and it's hard to place them on the same spectrum of morality that we use in the real world. I haven't read enough to know anything of Cat Sith's motives, etc, but take Lea, for example. I think she's the perfect example of "complex Fae stuff". Even now we aren't clear on how much (and which) of her actions are truly motivated by obligation, and what she does out of actual emotion. Even though she can't actually lie, we can't trust a word she says, and though her actions sometimes appear benevolent, we can't trust that either. On the flipside, there have been times she did seemingly bad things, only to find that she did it to prevent bigger bad things.

I guess what I'm saying is that yes, Fae do bad things to good people, but I attempt to place them on their own good<--->bad spectrum (which I guess would currently run from Kringle<---->Maeve though that is subject to change at any moment. I've only gotten to the part where Harry gets cleaned up at Molly's apartment.

What do people think the minimum age recommendation for reading the Dreseden files series is?
My son is 12 and a voracious reader, but this series seems too adult (referring to sexual content and torture scenes etc) for his age, but not sure when is appropriate to allow him to read it.

I know he could understand and process it though, just concerned about the adult concepts.

It is no different than aLord of the Rings content wise. There is a chance he might not like it, as Harry (our narrator) has a weird sense of humor. But if he does like it, there is no reason not to let him read it. Sure there is violence, but so far fetched from reality that it is clear that it is fiction. There is not many younger people either for him to associate.

I'm quite sure he would love the books"in principal" it's just too violent for a 12 year old. there's sexual and sexually violent scenes in it.

My feeling is 15-16, purely due to sexual content. I don't feel the series is overly violent compared to other fantasy.
