there is a nice story about one maker of a high end audio cables. it started with some decent prices. no one is buying them. on the verge of desperation maker decided to do one last move, the very same cables started to sell for quadruple price...the end result: customers went crazy, he can't make enough of them...

It makes sense that some power users might need the bump in capacity, and these businesses these people work for would be the ones paying for it:

In Apple's press release, the company cites a few specific use cases for such a giant iPad. Specifically, AutoCAD files and multi-track music files — we've been seeing lots of evidence of the iPad's growing prominence in music-making, so it's not unreasonable to imagine those power users requiring more storage.

You are shocked that additional memory prices doesn't match cost price?
Each bump in memory is $100:
iPad 4 16GB - $499
iPad 4 32GB - $599
iPad 4 64GB - $699
iPad 4 128GB - $799
(Which actually means this is the most reasonable (as in $/MB) of all of the bumps.)

The prices are about what people will pay, not what it costs.
In the UK, it costs £40 to go from 8GB to 16GB for a Nexus 4 or 7, but £70 for the same increase for a Nexus 10. Is that because it costs so much more? No, it is because that is what they think people will pay.

It would definitely make more sense to us consumers. It makes no sense to Apple since they want to make more profit through reaming us on memory prices!
