I may not agree with some of Baen's decisions and their books may now be outside my impulse buy range (but that is less of an issue considering the vast back catalogue I've left to read), I do think Baen need to be given a lot more slack than many other publishers.

Why? Because they've been pro DRM free for as long as I can remember. If changes are needed to keep the company running but they remain pro DRM free I'll get over whatever those changes are and I hope others do too.

There's an invitation on Baen's site to send an email to "pr@baen.com" if you missed out on buying any of the Baen bundles as a result of these unannounced changes. I've just done so, and Baen have very kindly refunded me the purchase price of the books that I bought separately as a consequence of missing the January bundle. Very good customer service!

Putting their books on Kindle, iBooks, and other ebookstores is a good and necessary step for their long term survival. The added visibility will be vital.
That said, smart shoppers will still buy from their Website even for single titles.
Multi-format >> single format even with DRM-free ebooks.

I believe their deal with Amazon is wholesale-style.
But, yes: given that I have to pay a higher price anyway, I'd rather the extra go to the writers and a publisher that doesn't tick me off.

It would not surprise me if Kobo Books was next. I agree, for visibility it is good for Baen. Myself personally, regardless of multi formats, I still buy direct from Baen. I prefer to give them the entire proceeds, and with Kindle sync for personal docs, makes no sense for me to buy from Amazon.

Getting their ebooks on as many outlets as possible just makes sense. The pricing issue is just a fact of life. I'll still buy at their website, but I do that for any author that sells their own work at their own site.
