This is basically the first part of a two-part novel. In this part, the title character takes a position on a strange estate, and suffers a mental derangement, to the distress of those who love him.

The sequel, Valerie French, follows him as he finds his way back to reality.

These two books together are a slightly unusual exercise for Yates.
