Mason, A.E.W.: They Wouldn't Be Chessmen, V1 1 Jan. 2013
A.E.W. Mason (7 May 1865 – 22 November 1948) is best known for his 1902 novel The Four Feathers that may be the most filmed novel of the 20th century. He was educated at Dulwich College and Trinity College, Oxford. He led the Dramatic Society at the latter school and was intent on a theatrical career, appearing in a small number of works on the London stage during the late 1880s. During this period he also began writing in his spare time — his first novel was published in 1890. Among his many books, he produced five mystery novels about a French investigator Inspector Hanaud of the French Sûreté.
This epub, They Wouldn't Be Chessmen (1935), is thought by many to be the best of the Hanaud series. In it Hanaud investigates the theft of a priceless pearl necklace that apparently was stolen by a young opera singer and her vanished accomplice.
