Browsing in Amazon kindle store - a better way?
I've been using an ereader for about four years - first a sony and then various kindles (now onto a paperwhite) but I'm finding the kindle store increasingly frustrating for browsing because there is so much junk in there - a lot of soft-porn and the like - Am I missing a trick on how to better filter my selections? |

Moved to the Kindle forum. I'm honestly not sure why that would be hard to find, given that you've been an MR member for well over 2 years!

To answer the question. Firstly, I never access the Kindle store on the Kindle - only via the web browser on either my PC or my iPhone. It's just too painful to use on an eInk Kindle!
You're right - random browsing is not easy; there are just too many books in the store. I generally do a more directed search, searching for either an author or a publisher. (Eg, I'm a science fiction fan, so I use searches like "Gateway science fiction" to find all the books published by Gateway). I also rely a lot of recommendations, from the "Reading Recommendations" forum here at MR, or on deals in the "Deals and Resources" forum.

I only read history and biography eBooks of more than 600 pages each. I find them from authors named in TV documentaries, TV talks shows and the NY Times non-fictoin lists.
I have 142 eBooks now waiting for me to read them. I like all equally. To choose the next for reading, I have them in an Excel Spreadsheet ranked by Pages per Dollar of price. I get the pages and price from the Amazon site. |

Agreed. I've have only shopped on my actual Kindle a couple of times. It is just not a fun experience.

Using the store on the Kindle itself is painful. It sometimes recommends me books I already bought. And when looking at those there is no indication that I already have them. Amazon knows everything else so much better than I do, but not what I already paid money for?

Please explain "pages per dollar of price". You decide what to read next according to how much you've paid per page ??

This site has been mentioned before on the forum but it lists freebies (several pages per day) and it has a filter for your pickyness :-)
http://www.ereaderiq.com/free/ I have gotten hundreds of books here. You click on the links and it takes you to Amazon for purchase. |
