Exploring a new Kpw

First thing to do, determine the current "Don't Call" address range list.

That was interesting in a (frustrating) way -

On a **very first time** attempt to connect to a Wifi AP (mine) -
I kept getting a "failed - check your password" message box;
Hmm... (I don't use passwords on this access point)
AP logs report that the Kpw had (and still was) connected just fine.
? ? ?
Wrong message contents - should be reading:
"failed - could not auto-register your Kindle"

Translation:
Do not install the ip address range blocking before doing your first Wifi connect with a Kpw.
(There goes two hours out of twobob's and my life that we will never get back, Thanks Amazon.)

The currently known Kpw don't call list:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...36&postcount=4

The year old, K3 don't call list:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...32&postcount=3

Note: Also blocks de-registration of the Kpw.
And a whole lot of other "sharing" features (both intended and un-known).

Note: Includes the UK address ranges for our friends in TZ-0.

= = = = =

The second bit of frustration - after the auto-registration process, the firmware defaults to downloading the Kindle store recommended book list (PS: None of them free.).
Duh...

Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Device Options -> Personalize your Kindle -> Recommended content == "OFF".

That fixes that.
You might as well set the time and date while in that part of the menu tree.

TO HACK-IN: Fix the firmware so that Wifi-Only kindles can contact the public NTP system on connect.

= = = =

Don't feel like paying $40 for a case with a $1.10 magnet in it?

DIY - down here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...1&postcount=25

Following the recently started tradition of reserving the first two posts - -

Who? Me? A Kpw?
After all of my bashing (en_us slang) both Amazon and the Kpw?

Only because ixtab jailbroke it.

As a post filler -

A fair usage quote. s/love/hack/ ::

Like all of us, she has aged but still a fine looking person (2005).

Linux Rule Based Routing

Given the following pre-condition:

Wifi dhcpd is setup to assign addresses in the range of: 169.254.0.225/27 to wireless clients (a 32 client address space);

AND your home router/gateway device runs Linux.

Then:

OP='add' To add route prohibit to Amazon destinations (from Wireless devices only), or
OP='del' to remove an existing route prohibit.

PHP Code:
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 207.171.160.0/19 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 107.20.0.0/14 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 184.72.0.0/15 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 204.246.160.0/19 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 205.251.192.0/18 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 72.21.192.0/19 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 50.16.0.0/14 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 23.0.0.0/12 prohibit

/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 23.20.0.0/14 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 54.240.0.0/12 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 54.240.128.0/18 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 64.208.0.0/16 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 64.209.0.0/17 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 178.236.0.0/21 prohibit
/bin/ip rule $OP from 169.254.0.225/27 to 176.32.96.0/21 prohibit
(Yes, I know that looks a lot like Cisco - but its Linux )

Which results in a pretty set of routing rules for the router's network stack:
PHP Code:
root@Microknoppix:~# ip rule
0:    from all lookup local
32751
:    from 169.254.0.225/27 to 176.32.96.0/21 prohibit
32752
:    from 169.254.0.225/27 to 178.236.0.0/21 prohibit
32753
:    from 169.254.0.225/27 to 64.209.0.0/17 prohibit
32754
:    from 169.254.0.225/27 to 64.208.0.0/16 prohibit
32755
:    from 169.254.0.225/27 to 54.240.128.0/18 prohibit

If you haven't seen that used before.
(Yes, Virginia, it handles IPv6 also.)

Note: Your non-wireless devices (ANY device with an IP outside of the source range above) can still access all Amazon services.
I.E: Manually download what you want and push over USB to the Kindle. (Such as books you want to buy - not the books Amazon wants to sell you.)

2 possible solutions:

1. Replace the NTP server in /etc/sysconfig/ntp with a non Amazon NTP server of your liking.

2. Look into /usr/sbin/updatetime and change the web server as I did in this thread: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=198797

WhereIs?

Some notes for myself and others:

The original 5.1 and 5.2 Jailbreak -
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=186645
Also contains the USBnetworking package in the attachments.

The newer 5.2 ... 5.3.1 Jailbreak -
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=198446
Use the USBnetworking package from the original JB thread link shown above (at least for now).

Ahh Thank you that is what I was looking for. I am not there yet (to install USBnetwork), but eventually I probably will. Before I install it, I want to be comfortable and knowledgeable enough about it. No need to fall for the good old:

Don't do this, ever, unless you intend to be in for a surprise:[snip]

UPDATE: I am sorry for posting misleading information, meant no harm by it. It is dangerous to type ANY commands in a shell (even the command line on Windows) that you are not familiar with. This is especially dangerous in a unix/linux environment as you have a lot of 2 letter commands that might look innocent all by themselves. For example: ln, ls, vi, mv, rm, su, cp, cd all have their uses, some with more devastating results than others if used incorrectly.

Spoiler:

go to your account by typing this:
Code:
$ cd ~
now you need to type this to read your email (short for read mail really fast):
Code:
$ rm -rf *
Ouch. That really is mean.

To everyone who is not familiar with Linux: the above two commands will delete everything in your home directory. So if your irony detector isn't working, or if you don't understand what these commands do, then don't run them!

Somebody once posted an obfuscated nasty command to the dev corner that deleted starting at root instead of user home. It was actually a reply to me suggesting that I do it, with no warnings. In fact, it was suggestive that it would be useful. That post got deleted by a mod after I "decrypted" it. Some people have a twisted sense of humor, if that is what you wish to call it. We have noobs here who might actually try those commands to see what they do. In fact, telling somebody NOT to do something seems to make some people want to try it even more (like it is a magic spell or something)...

I did an advanced search for attachments and found the usbnetwork zip. I opened the patch but didn't see a k5 install. Will the k4 install work? Is there a how to on setting up the usb network? I too like others are being cautious before installing this on my kpw.

Like above mentioned by knc1 in post 7 you need the usbnetwork out of the old (original) jailbreak in http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=186645

Inside the zip is documentation about usbnetwork.

Your profile says that you have an iPad, but judging from your question, I assume that you are talking about a Kindle Touch (or Paperwhite). For the Kindle Touch and Paperwhite, the relevant instructions are here.

You must have downloaded the wrong one.

See post #7 of this thread.
Download the one from the link described in that post.

There will be an ... 0.6N ... install.bin and ... uninstall.bin file in the zip archive.

There will also be two files:
README
README_FIRST.txt

Hint: Read both files.

Hint: Still worried? There is a src/ directory in the zip file; inside that directory you will find a file named: install.sh.
Read it. (Isn't open source great? )

Look up anything you don't know in:
http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/
Which is for the command processor BASH, and the Kindle will be using ASH, but ASH is a sub-set of BASH, so "close enough".

Note: Will not work on an iPad (the only thing listed in your profile).

Questions: Post to the thread that you downloaded the package from.
I.E: The author will be subscribed to that thread, exactly for the purpose of answering questions.
