Kindle paperwhite and PDFs

Hi there,

my question is quite simple .
I would like to know if on the kindle paperwhite you can zoom in on PDFs to any amount you like and then use the page turn-buttons to skip threw the document (from page part 1 to page part 2 to next page part 1 to next page part 2, etc.) by using the turn-page buttons?

Thx.

you can pinch-zoom to varying degrees of enlargement, but it's a bit cumbersome and the screen flashes each time to refresh the display. This is a bit uncomfortable on the eyes. Once enlarged you can only use your single finger to move the page up-down-left-right.

To turn to the next page, the page size must be reverted to its original full page size, by first pinching-unzooming. Then, you just touch the page (90% of the screen area on the right side) as per normal to go to the next page. To go back a page you touch the left 10% of the screen.

PDF viewing is not as optimal or easy as with an iPad.

Errm - what "page turn buttons"? Duokan announced support for the KPW in the upcoming version, and over at KindlePDFviewer (which views much more than just PDFs) we're steadily working on support for K4/KTouch/KPW. But it's not quite there yet.

No 6" reader is really suitable for display of A4/Letter PDFs. That's a task that a large-screen tablet excels at. I think you'd find it an exercise in frustration to try to read a book that way on the PW.

And each of them support that feature?
Zoom in and then skip threw the document per button/gesture?

As @HarryT stated PDFs are not a good match for 6" eInk screens. You might check out the Sony readers though, I had one a couple of years ago, the PRS-350, which could magnify the screen when the PDF had two or three columns, keep it magnified , and page through the columns. I'm not sure if the newer Sony readers still offer that feature. It only worked like that for multi-column PDFs and it was far from being ideal.

Both Paperwhite and Kindle Touch have a 'column reading' mode, which you enter by double-tapping the text you want to start with. In this mode, it will stay zoomed in and fit the current column to the screen width. Page turn gestures then will advance to the bottom of the column, then to the next column (or page). It will stay in this mode until you double tap again. It will work with single column page layouts as well.

It doesn't work perfectly (column detection is heuristic, not based on the structure of the PDF document, since that can be horrible), but it is much easier than manually zooming and panning around.

The other thing that is often workable is to go to landscape mode (the above column mode is available there as well, useful in single column to trim white space).

Sony has some interesting PDF navigation options as well but at least on the PRS-T1 they messed up landscape mode. I can never get optimal fit to screen, and the cropping tool is broken.

That said, everything is much better for PDF on a 9-10" tablet. Better apps and with better PDF support.

Adobe Export PDF

If you really want to convert PDF files to Kindle format, first subscribe here to Adobe Export for $ 20.00 per year:

http://success.adobe.com/en/na/sem/s...121218164421:s

Then send your resulting Word file after your own editing to your Kindle using the email address on the Manage Your Kindle page at Amazon.

That will give you a perfect Kindle file allowing Kindle fonts, highlighting, notes, bookmarks, etc.

From that Adobe page:

"Adobe ExportPDF makes the most of richly formatted PDF files with the ability to preserve paragraphs, tables, images, and even multi-column text."

Arrrgh! So actually they are all capable of doing the right thing but keep on ruining it by coming up with some fancy stuff like double-tap-to-zoom-to-column and 3-column-view, etc.

It could be so easy..

The fundamental problem is that PDF was never intended to be used for the purpose that you wish to use it for. A PDF file is a digital representation of a fixed-sized page layout. Trying to read a PDF that's been formatted for an A4 page on a 6" screen is just using the wrong tool for the job. If you want to read on a 6" screen, use a document format that intended for the purpose, like ePub or Mobi.

PDFs are terrible on Kindles.

Some are tolerable. But generally are more trouble than they're worth.

'terrible' perhaps but at the same time, 'better than ever'. PW has nearly the same screen resolution as iPad2, which is considered pretty good for PDF. The 6" screen will appear as large as a 10" screen if you hold it 40% closer. <g>

KindlePDFviewer does solve a lot of problems for Kindle 3. It also has a 10 percent angle turn which is good for reading in bed.

I admit the Sony TR1 cropping is not perfect, but u do not need it. I have found that if it does not work well u just exit and open the book with no crop eTc settings and just use fit to width auto setting which works, and it is permanently saved for the book.
