Are you buying these directly from the publisher or from a retailer such as Barnes and Noble? All the penguin ebooks I bought from B&N have cover.

What I don't understand is how Penguin ebooks use the proper cover in the thumbnail, but use the generic penguin for the full-size cover image. If it were just a question of rights and royalties, wouldn't the publisher be obliged to use the plainer cover for the thumbnail as well?
Penguin's not the only offender too. |

The one Penguin book I've purchased (pre-Agency, so it was a good price) has the same cover as the print edition. It uses that as the thumbnail. When you open the book, the title page is page 1.

When I stripped the DRM off Cold Days it took out the little graphic at the top of each chapter, maybe that has something to do with the message that you're getting?

Penguin audio WMAs from the library also have a generic cover. I unforgivable in a world full of screens! It's not 1992 any more.

I believe that in some cases, the larger the size of the ebook in bytes, the more they get charged for distribution. A nice cover can eat up more bytes that all the text in the book combined. Thumbnails are small in size, so they wouldn't cost as much to include as the full size cover image. It seems to me that being cheap is what it's all about, when you don't even include a simple cover image of the book title and author's name on a plain background.
