Wharton, Edith: Ethan Frome | v.1.0 | 29 Nov 2012

In advance of an epub edition of the complete works of Edith Wharton which I’m currently working on, here’s Ethan Frome for this month’s book club!

I checked the formatting, corrected apostrophes, and restored the italics from the print edition.

Here's the blurb from the front page:
Quote:
Set against the bleak winter landscape of New England, Ethan Frome tells the story of a poor farmer, lonely and downtrodden, his wife Zeena, and her cousin, the enchanting Mattie Silver. In the playing out of this short novel's powerful and engrossing drama, Edith Wharton constructed her least characteristic and most celebrated book. In its unyielding and shocking pessimism, its bleak demonstration of tragic waste, it is a masterpiece of psychological and emotional realism.
Sounds like a book to match the weather. I think I'll sit this one out and wait for your complete Wharton...

I happen to love the winter for its erasures and minimalism, and for the crystalline landscapes it imposes at its most inhumane. Winter's the god of brutal revisions in the same way that Kali can be. Thanks for this.
