Why are ebooks removed but not paper versions?

Woe is me. I was hoping to purchase more Kindle books (or epubs elsewhere) by Peter May, specifically all three of his Lewis Trilogy. Not only are they not available to purchase but all of his previously available ebooks appear to have been removed in the U.S. They used to be available at Amazon and Poisoned Pen Press but are no longer. (He is Scottish with books published in the U.K.)

The paper versions can be purchased but I no longer read PBs. Does anyone know why this might be or where one can go to purchase the ebooks?

It looks like you can use the discount codes with them as well.

Seems weird indeed that any given e-book suddenly may not be available as such anymore. They can't say that they're out of stock cause that is impossible with digital content.

Contract terms. The right to publish the work might be lost by the current publisher, and then the publisher would have to withdraw the ebook.

In this case, however, I thought the publisher for the PB and the ebook were the same.

Still, the paper and ebook rights might be independent. Also, if the publisher lost rights to both they would have to stop publishing but current stock in the hands of a retailer could still be sold. With ebooks that would mean an immediate end to availability, but with paper the retailer might still have stock for some time (years in cases of slow moving stock).

Sometimes, it makes no sense. I was looking for the second book in a trilogy and checked to see if I can save some money by getting the French, German or Spanish kindle version. Strange thing is that I found the Catalonian version as an ebook and pbook in the French store, but only as a pbook in the Spanish Amazon store, which is where like 99% of their Catalan speakers are at. I can even buy the Catalonian ebook in the US kindle store, just not in the country where the language is spoken.
