Hi everyone!

I've been hunting around for screensavers. I've found plenty on tumblr including this one that has a pretty good selection: Kindlescreens

Russian-language Kindle e-books can be found at www.MobiPocket.ru
They are traditionally delivered zipped, but i've heard from the eevelopers of the ite recently they plan to add clear .mobi download links, so e-books would be easier to download directly to the devices (like feeding in Kindle app on iPad directly).

New Kindle manual

There's another manual on the Kindle out. "Kindle - the unofficial manual. Guidebook, tips and tricks" claims to be the most comprehensive of all available publications. It actually contains some stuff I didn't know yet

Conversion program for .doc files to Kindle format

Someone told me there was a program I could download to my PC that would convert my MS Word .doc files to Kindle format. If such exists, what is it and where can I get it? (I really need a program where I can batch convert, i. e., convert a lot of files at one time since I have hundreds of .doc files).

Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at the best product available - Calibre? It will convert almost anything to Kindle .mobi format. You can copy en mass by selecting all the documents you want. and then similarly select all the documents you want converted and copied to you device in one go.

There is a sub-forum on MR dedicated to Calibre.

I think that Jesse Vincent ported calibre to run on a Kindle 2, didn't he? I think that it used a loop-mount filesystem, as I recall. It may need some work to run it on newer kindles.

EDIT: "Savory allows you to read .epub and .pdf files on your Kindle. It does this by converting these documents to Mobipocket format ebooks using Calibre."
http://blog.fsck.com/2009/04/savory.html

Unless there have been updates to the version of calibre that he ported, it may not have .DOC file support (but you could add it while adding touchscreen support ).

If this got updated, we would not need to be tied to a host PC to convert our documents.

A simple tool that lets you convert any image into Kindle screensaver format and has an option of adding "Slide and release to wake" label.

Quick Readable US Weather Forecasts

My August 2011 weather tip began failing in June 2012, because the National Weather Service changed the link mobile.weather.gov to -- and I just figured this out tonight -- cell.weather.gov. So, for classic eInk-friendly US weather forcasts, we now can:

1. Navigate to cell.weather.gov, via Robin Gardner's readingthenet.com, by entering this url:

tinyurl.com/cbtjg3n

2. Enter your zip code in the first entry block and click on Go.

3. Navigate down to, and click on:

Detailed 7-day Forecast

The rest is for the benefit of newbies:

4. When the forecast is returned, press Menu and then save with "Bookmark this Page."

5. To give a clearly understandable bookmark name, press Menu again to go to Bookmarks.

6. To get to your new bookmark, you may have to go down one page, as in a book.

7. When your new and ill-named bookmark is underlined, press the right side of the five-way.

8. Press the center of the five-way and type in "My Home Town Weather" or similar.

Fast-Loading News for the Experimental Browser

With today's announcement of the Kindle Paperwhite 3G with "experimental WebKit-based browser," I see a fine future for this thread.

These may not be links that every Kindle owner should have. But if you are looking for eInk-friendly international news that loads quickly, with an easy to read font (thank you again, Robin Gardner), this may be your post.

For each link, first I give the full url so you can see what it is, then the shortened version that's easier to type:

More finds, mostly brought to my attention by wapreview.com. This time I am first going to give the raw small-font site, before giving the larger fonts processed by readingthenet.org:

Slate Web Magazine
http://mobile.slate.com/
http://www.readingthenet.com/mob?ct=...e.slate.com%2F
tinyurl.com/ct6dx3q

Daily Nation (Kenya)
http://mobile.nation.co.ke/
http://www.readingthenet.com/mob?ct=...ation.co.ke%2F
tinyurl.com/9ms56c7

New Zealand Herald
http://mobile.nzherald.co.nz/
http://www.readingthenet.com/mob?ct=...erald.co.nz%2F
tinyurl.com/8fsuepy

This next one is a bit too partisan in its content, but I include as it has some good essays, and is a superior technical example of a site that's better on the Kindle Keyboard than most other platforms:

City Journal
http://www.city-journal.org/mobile/index.php
http://www.readingthenet.com/mob?ct=...le%2Findex.php
tinyurl.com/cssvb38

I only have two links for the last one as I can't get it working with small fonts, even though there must be a way. Whenever the Euro is in crisis (and when isn't it?), go to:

Spiegel (Germany)
http://www.readingthenet.com/mob?ct=...l.de%2Fenglish
tinyurl.com/cepjgfk

I found a useful trick that the Kindle’s browser has. If you browse to a website with a lot of articles (such as nytimes.com) you can use the “Article Mode” to read the article without any of the other distractions on the web site.
First, browse to the web site of your choice. Then use the Enter key to zoom into the section of the page which has the article you want to read. Once you have zoomed in select the article. Once the article has opened select Menu and select Article Mode. This will reformat the article into a book format, allowing you to read through it as though it were another book on the Kindle.

Yes you can, and "It Depends". For best result run them through the KindlePDF Converter/Optimiser, which is somewhere on these boards. If I can find the link I'll come back and post it

*Edit*

Here you are:-

http://willus.com/k2pdfopt/ . Drag your PDF onto the .exe file and hit enter to see how it looks. Sometimes you need to do a bit of manual tweaking to the parameters first.
